Singapore –
Batam – Taiwan
On November 20th, I left for my 66th
overseas mission trip. I overnighted in Taiwan before heading on to attend the
Four Seas College Lectureship to encourage those who attended, to visit with
friends, and speak at three Chinese services at the Lim Ah Pin church.
After attending the lectureship and
speaking at the Chinese services at Lim Ah Pin, I traveled to the island of
Batam, Indonesia to teach two nights to the brethren there. Timbul Siriat, one
of the instructors at the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy, traveled from Lampung
Province to translate for me. While I there, I spoke on Leadership in the
Church and Leadership in the Home. On the second day, we had a baptism of one
of the teenagers of the congregations in Batam. After those two days, I
overnighted in Singapore then headed to Taiwan for the rest of the trip. I arrived
safely and Taiwan and made my way down to Taichung via train and taxi. Brother
Kwan also was in Taiwan for teaching in Taipei and at the lectureship in
Taichung.
The lectureship began Friday night,
December 1st. Brother Wang was the first speaker. The theme of the lectureship
was the book of Nehemiah. There were more than thirty in attendance for the
first session of the lectures. There were five visitors included in that
number. As usual, brother Wang did a great job in presenting a lesson on the
first two chapters of Nehemiah.
On Saturday morning, brother Jao from
Taipei spoke, followed by brother Wang. In the afternoon, I spoke on Nehemiah
chapter six and brother Kwan spoke on chapters 7-12. After this lesson, we had
the opportunity to baptize a lady into Christ. Brother Kwan met with her for
about an hour to make sure she was ready to become a Christian. We then had a
lesson on Saturday night by Jadyn Chen. He is the preacher for Batu Pahat in
Malaysia. Sunday morning brought the lectureship to an end. I spoke on Nehemiah
chapter thirteen and brother Kwan spoke concerning the prayers made by Nehemiah
throughout the book.
On Monday and Tuesday, we made a number
of visits with members and prospects. We had some very good visits on these two
days. The same is true for Wednesday. On Thursday, I traveled by train to
Hualien, where I would be for the next week.
On Friday, we made one visit after another
with members and visitors to teach and encourage. On Saturday morning, we continued
the visiting.
Sunday is always a busy day in Hualien.
The day begins at 5:50 AM as we head for the Assisted Living home for the first
of four services on the day. I speak in Mandarin at the homes and brother Wang
translates into Taiwanese. There were about 45 in attendance for the service,
including a 104 year old brother. After this service, we had Bible study and
worship services at the church building. I spoke at both the Bible class and
worship periods. At 2:30 in the afternoon, we conducted the worship service at
the second Assisted Living home. For the three services, about seventy people
here in Hualien worshipped with us on Sunday.
On Monday, we had a Bible study in the
morning with a few of the people at the assisted living home. In the afternoon,
we studied with brother Wang’s nephew. In the evening we had dinner with one of
our members who was visiting from southern Taiwan and one of her friends. On
Tuesday morning, we had a lengthy Bible study with two members who are having difficulty
with understanding some difficult passages. In the late afternoon, we visited
one of the older members to encourage her.
Wednesday started and ended with a Bible
study. In between, we drove down the east coast of Taiwan toward Taitung. On
the trip, we crossed over the Tropic of Cancer. I have done this several times
in my life, but I have never seen a marker before. My last day in Hualien, I
taught classes at both of the assisted living homes and was taken to another
beautiful place outside of Hualien I had never seen before.
On Friday, I took the train to Taipei. I
arrived about noon and did some quick shopping before checking in to my room. I
took the rest of the day to rest up a bit. On Saturday, I attended the funeral
of brother William Chen’s father. In the evening, I preached Saturday night for
about 90 minutes. On Sunday, I preached at the worship service and at the Bible
study. We had about fifteen to attend. In the afternoon, I went to view a
British Library exhibit of Egyptian mummies at the National Palace Museum in
Taipei.
On Monday, I began my trip home. Even
though there were some slight delays, I still arrived home ahead and schedule.
Thanks for all the prayers offered on my behalf and all the hospitality shown
to me by my brethren overseas.
My next scheduled overseas trip is to
Indonesia in February 2018.
