June Events
I returned from my Singapore-Malaysia trip on June
8th. It took me more than a week to get back to my normal sleep patterns. This
is usual with me. Getting back to normal at home takes much longer than getting
into the swing of things when I am overseas.
I had much to catch-up on that had piled
up while I was away. I spent the first week home taking care of those things.
In the midst of all of this was my birthday and Father’s Day. On Sunday night,
June 17th, I gave my PowerPoint report of my recent mission trip. Seth Michael,
the preacher at Chestnut Mountain, videotaped the presentation and coordinates
the slides with my speaking. It is now available on the internet at this site:

You will have to copy this
and paste it into your browser.
I had a doctor’s appointment and dentist
appointments after I returned from the trip as well. These are part of my
regular routine.

THE BIBLE AND THE CHINESE CULTURE
While working in Asia, we discovered that most Chinese
people think the Bible is a “western” book. Since most denominational
missionaries came from the west, there is the misconception that Christianity
is a western religion.
God wants all people to be
saved (1 Timothy 2:4). He does not want anybody to be lost (2 Peter 3:9). This
is the reason Christ came to the earth (John 3:16; Romans 5:6-8). This includes
Chinese people.
They are surprised to learn that the
church that Jesus established began in the east, not the west. Jesus was from the east, not the west. He was
a Jew, from the nation of Israel. Israel is part of the east, not the west. You
do not read about anyone from the “west” in the Bible until the Roman empire is
mentioned at the opening of the New Testament.
Although the word Chinese is not in the
Bible, the Bible does include Chinese people. People are constantly wondering
about the origin of languages. The Bible has the answer. The most ancient of
languages began at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). This includes the
Chinese language. It is very interesting
to learn the Chinese character for “boat” is made of three “parts.” Those three
“parts” are: “vessel,” the number “8,” and one of the words for “people.” When
you think about a vessel with eight people, what comes to mind? The ark! Isn’t
it interesting the word for “boat” in Chinese has a very interesting connection
to a Bible story. Is this a coincidence? I do not believe so. God put that
knowledge in their language at the tower of Babel.
Romans 1:18-25 talks about those who left
God and worshipped idols. This also discusses the degree of the departure. The
Chinese culture fits into this passage. As a people, they have gone a long
distance from God. In order for them to come back, they have a long trip to
make. It will take more time for them to make that trip then it would for those
much closer.
It would take much more time to travel
from China to Chicago than from Memphis to Chicago. It is easier to cross a plain than to cross a
mountain. What we have said about Chinese people is also true of many Asians.
It is hard to reach them with the gospel. Even though it is a difficult field,
the great commission still includes these people.
When we preach the gospel, regardless of
the culture, we must preach the pure gospel of Christ. The gospel is the only
way people can be saved (Romans 1:16; James 1:21; 1 Peter 1:22-25; Hebrews
4:12).
