72nd Mission Trip –
April 18-July 1
On April 18th, I departed for Indonesia to
unite with my wife and begin my 72nd Mission Trip since 1985. This will be my
wife’s third mission trip. I am thankful she can accompany me on our trips to
be an encouragement to the local brethren and to me wherever we go.
I had an uneventful trip to Jakarta. First,
going from Atlanta to Tokyo. Second, Tokyo to Singapore. After an eight-hour
layover in Singapore, I took the last part of the trip on to Jakarta. I arrived
on time in Jakarta and took a taxi to meet my wife and step-daughters.
On Sunday morning (April 21), we attended the
Sunter congregation. The brethren there asked me to speak at the worship and
the Bible class. We stayed in Jakarta for the appointment for Eta to meet with
the officials at the American Embassy. Her appointment was on Wednesday
morning. As with her first application, the second application was also
rejected. We are going to explore the options we have available to us and see
what action we might take. For now, Eta does not have a visa which will enable
her to accompany me to the United States. Please continue to remember us in
prayer. I plan to write letters to various of our federal officials, but we do
not know if it will be of any help.
On April 24th, we returned to Lampung where I
would begin two weeks of classes at the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy. These
classes are scheduled through May 9th. I am teaching the Epistles of John to
about twelve 1st and 2nd year students at the school. Most of the students have
been Christians for less than two years, but they are doing very well in their
study of the Bible. Jon Ropelemba has been doing the translating for me. He is
one of the three full-time teachers at the school.
In addition to the classes, I also have had
the opportunity teach the Thursday night classes and the Sunday services.
The house that belongs to my wife has been in
need of renovations for a number of years. In the past month, she has been
working on getting many improvements made on the house that will allow me to
fit in. Even though it will be several more weeks before the house renovations
are completed, we will begin living there the first week in May.
On May 16th, Eta and I will begin another of
our mission trips, this time to Malaysia. I will be speaking at the Section 17
congregation on two different occasions in both English and Chinese. They now
have a Sunday night Chinese service. Already, they have had two baptisms as a result
of these efforts. On the following weekend, we will be at the Subang Jaya
congregation. The following weekend we will be at the Chinese Asian Bible
Lectureship. We are looking forward to being with our brethren in Malaysia.
While we are in Malaysia, we will travel to
Melaka to allow Eta to see her doctor for her annual medical check-up.
After returning to Indonesia in June, we are
planning a reception for friends and family who were unable to attend the
wedding in November. My youngest son, Sam, and my daughter, Libby, are planning
on attending this event. Following the reception, my two attending children,
Eta’s two girls, and we will go to Bali for a few days. We will worship with
the church in Bali while there.
It had been our plan to return to the states
on July 1st, but as it stands right now, I will be returning to the states
alone. Please continue to pray for our ability to travel together in the world
proclaiming the precious gospel of Jesus Christ.
Eta and I are so thankful for your prayers.
We knew when we got married, we would have to make adjustments in our lives.
But, at the same time, we are going to continue to do what we can to reach out
to the Chinese-speaking world.
