Singapore and Malaysia Trip

Before leaving for my 52nd overseas mission trip to Singapore and Malaysia in late May and June, I had the privilege to preach at the Chestnut Mountain congregation.

In less than 24 hours after I left Atlanta, I arrived in Singapore. I did not have to wait very long in immigration and my luggage was waiting for me at the carousel. After getting to the hotel and getting all my luggage sorted out, I got to bed about 3:45 AM local time. I had planned to sleep until about 8:00 or 9:00 am. When I finally woke up, it was 12:15 PM! That was a first for me! After getting up and getting cleaned up, I was able to run my normal errands on the first day back in Asia.

On Friday night through Sunday morning, a gospel meeting was conducted at the Jurong Church of Christ with Chris Herd. I had the privilege to attend these series of meetings. On Sunday evening, I attended the Chinese service at the Lim Ah Pin congregation.

On Monday morning, I boarded the bus chartered my members of the Jurong congregation to travel to Malaysia to attend the Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship (CABL). Note: The reason I fly to Singapore instead of Kuala Lumpur is because of the savings in cost. The price is about half what it would cost to fly directly to Kuala Lumpur. Also, the time needed to complete the trip is about eight hours quicker.

I had the privilege to speak at the 9th Annual Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship. The lectureship this year was conducted at a resort outside of Port Dickson, Malaysia. There were nine speakers and about 200 people from Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, and the USA who attended the lectureship. Thanks to Ong Eng Boon and Jedediah Yuan for serving as the coordinators for this effort. The theme this year was: “Trusting God in Times of Adversity.” I had the privilege of speaking twice at the lectureship as well as serving on one of the three question and answer panels. The lectureship will be in Johor Bahru, Malaysia next year.

After the lectureship, I headed for Section 17 (which is in the greater Kuala Lumpur area of Malaysia) where I conducted a weekend gospel meeting on the theme of the importance of “Remembering.” I also had the opportunity to spend some time with many of my friends there as well.

Before speaking at the Kota Kemuning congregation which is also in the Kuala Lumpur area; I attended a visitation and funeral for the mother of Allen Tan. In addition to presenting three lessons at KK, we made visits to the hospital and also to a prospect. On Monday, I headed back to Singapore to catch my flight home.

I took a number of books and other materials with me to distribute among some of the brethren in both Singapore and Malaysia. On a future trip, I am hoping to bring out more Chinese DVD’s for use among the Chinese speaking people in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China.

Thanks to all of my supporters who make these efforts possible. I am thankful for your financial help, but also thankful for your prayers on my behalf as I make these trips both domestic and overseas.

April Lectureships and Gospel Meetings

I had the privilege to attend two lectureships and two gospel meetings during the month of April. It was good to see many friends and hear some excellent lessons at both the Memphis School of Preaching and the Southwest School of Bible Studies. Memphis School of Preaching also sent two groups of students to two area congregations for gospel meeting/campaigns. Dan Cates took a group to the Rabun County congregation in northeast Georgia where McKinley Pate preaches. B.J. Clarke took a second group to Adairsville in northwest Georgia where Rick Lawson preaches.

In the second week of the month, I had the privilege to attend the Southwest Lectures in Austin, TX. Even though I was not scheduled to speak, I ended up filling in for one of the speakers presenting two lessons on Tuesday morning. There were many excellent lessons presented and I greatly enjoyed the fellowship and friendship of many brethren there.

In the last full week of April, I went up to visit my mother, three of my grandchildren, and Imogene Hann, one of mom’s life-long friends and member of the Groveport, Ohio Church of Christ. We went through Greenwood, Indiana to see the grandkids, then went on over to Ohio spend the weekend with Imogene. Mom went with me to Indianapolis and Ohio. While we were in Greenwood, we were able to celebrate the twelfth birthday of my grandson Ethan.

I spoke at the Groveport church on Sunday morning. Mom and I went back to worship Sunday night with the Shelbyville Road Church of Christ in Indianapolis before heading back to Terre Haute Sunday night. On Monday morning, I headed to the Indianapolis International Airport to head back home. It was good to be able to see my mother and three of my grandchildren again. My mother will turn ninety years old on August 15th.

I had a safe trip back home to Georgia and will continue working on my projects leading up to my next overseas trip at the end of this month.

Singapore and Malaysia Trip at the End of This Month

At the end of this month, I will be making my 52nd overseas mission trip to Singapore and Malaysia. I will be speaking at the 9th Annual Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship. I will conduct gospel meetings in English at the Section 17 and Kota Kemuning congregations.

Thanks to all of my supporters who make these efforts possible.

Subject: Brett

Dear brethren,

Thank you so much for your outpouring of care and concern on behalf of
my brother and my family. He is still two weeks away from his second
biopsy. As of this time we still have no answers concerning the nature
of his brain tumor. Additional complications have arisen while he is
waiting for the second biopsy, but he seems to have stabilized as of
last report.

Many of you have contributed money to assist my parents in flying over
to Tasmania to visit with my brother. Words cannot express how much we
appreciate what you have done. Enough funds have been raised to
purchase their airfare and they will be leaving soon.

More funds than needed for their airfare have been given. These will be
used to help Brett and his family with their additional expenses.
Enough has been given to cover their additional expenses through the
next few months. For this reason we are no longer requesting financial
help for my brother. However, we continue to ask for prayers on his
behalf.

The treasurer here has kept a record of the names and addresses of those
who have given money for Brett. Those will be sent to my parents who
will develop a full financial report after their return home. That
report will be sent to the church here and will be available for any who
request it.

I thank God for you, your generosity, and your prayers. May God bless
you as you labor in the kingdom.

Kevin Rutherford

FOOT UPDATE

I had out-patient surgery on my right foot on February 11th. I had the stitches taken out on March 3rd. I wore the air cast until April 3rd. When I went to the doctor on the 3rd, the doctor looked at the X-ray and my foot and said, “I think it is time to get you out of that boot!” Happy news! I am back in regular shoes and have started back to my walking routine.

Thanks to all of you for continuing to pray for my full recovery. I have received many cards and nice comments. I have also had brethren contribute to the out of pocket cost for this injury. Compared to what so many other brethren are facing in their lives, this was just a small inconvenience. JMG.

Fishers of Men Training Class -
Final Comments

On January 13th, we started a Fishers of Men Training Class conducted at the Chestnut Mountain Church of Christ. There were three new students enrolled for the class. I also allowed some of our students from the last class to attend to be encouraged in continuing in their teaching efforts. This class continued through March 24th. Please pray much good will result because of the efforts made in this class.

We continue to have a monthly evangelism meeting to encourage each other to continue using our abilities to reach the lost.

There is an effort underway to raise funds to enable his parents, Rod and Brenda Rutherford, to travel to Tasmania to assist the family. HUMOR FROM THE MISSION FIELD
John M. Grubb

It is essential that while in the mission field you keep your sense of humor. The way things have happened to us, that has not been hard to do. We hope you enjoy these REAL stories from the mission field.

Unscheduled Train Ride

In May 1983, the Tommy Alford family came to Taichung for a visit. As is our custom, we both greet and see off our visitors. They were traveling on the train, so that meant seeing them off right at the door of the train. In this way, we could help with luggage and say our good-byes.

When the Alfords were getting ready to return home, we were on the platform waiting for the arrival of their train. While we were waiting, we noticed some American VIP’s walking by us. I had read in the paper that morning that the Governor of Mississippi was going to visit our city and here he was! Coincidentally, Tommy is from Mississippi. Tommy recognized the governor and told me so. Well, me with my big mouth, yelled, “Hey, there are some people from Mississippi over here.”  The governor did not come over, but his wife and a Mississippi banker did come over and visited for a couple of minutes.

While we were talking to the governor’s wife, the train arrived. In Taiwan, trains only stop for three or four minutes so you have to “hussle.” We didn’t! We had boarded the train to help put the luggage in the overhead racks. While we were saying final goodbyes, the train began to move.  Roger, Daniel (my son), and I ran for the door. There was a porter there and he would not let us jump off. We were stuck.

There are several kinds of trains in Taiwan. Some stop quite often. Some just make a few stops between Taichung and Taipei. Unfortunately, we were on the kind that only stopped a few times.  We had to ride almost 90 minutes before we could get off the train! We had to purchase tickets for the ride, then had to get off the train and buy return tickets.

We made the best of a bad situation. We sat down and visited an additional 90 minutes, spent about an hour looking around a new city, then returned home on the train. What was supposed to be a two hour trip ended up being a six hour trip! Needless to say, we didn’t get much done that day. (Note: Tommy and Renee Alford are making yet another trip to Taiwan and will be riding on trains while there. As Ira Rice used to say about doing mission work: “don’t assume anything.")

Floods have affected our brethren in Manado, Sulawesi

The brethren in Manado have been hit hard by a flood. Members have had their homes badly damaged. Brother Alex Daniel, the director of the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy, informed me that these brethren need help. He said over half of the members have been displaced due to water damage in their homes. One family lost their home entirely, and they are now living in the church building along with other members.

If you would like to help with a contribution, I will give you information about how to do that later in this newsletter.

If you would like to help with a contribution, please send your check to:
