New Zealand Trip – For the First Time
March 11-April 8

As I begin the first of four overseas mission trips this year, I will be making my 55th trip since 1985. This will be my first trip to New Zealand. In 1997 I transited through Auckland on my way to Australia. This time I will transit through Australia to go to New Zealand. It will be the first time I will actually get to meet and work with the brethren there in the country. I solicit your prayers as I begin on this trip. Please pray for safe travels to and fro and while I am in the country.

I am thankful for all the brethren who help to make these trips possible and for enabling me to do what I can to help with the works in various countries across the Pacific. Even though it will be the middle of April before you receive my next newsletter, I will have a full report in the April report. Also, be sure to follow my trip on my Facebook page.

A Month of Preparation

The month of February was a month of preparation for the trip to New Zealand and the speaking appointments I have there. I worked hard to get several PowerPoint lessons ready for the lectureship in New Plymouth and the Chinese gospel meeting scheduled in Porirua.

In addition to these lessons, I have been working on my assignments for the upcoming Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship and Gospel Meetings in Malaysia. I also had the privilege to teach the Wednesday night auditorium Bible class at Chestnut Mountain for about six weeks. Ron Cope and I share the duties, and I teach the class whenever I am home. Thanks to Ron for allowing me to help out with this class.

Grubb Mission Report - February 2015

On January 19th, I headed for Lakeland, Florida to attend the Florida School of Preaching Lectures which was held at the South Florida Avenue Church of Christ. The theme of the lectures was “The Sermon on the Mount.” There were many excellent lessons presented during the week. It was great to see so many preachers I have known through the years and to get to them preach again.

On Friday morning, I drove to Sebring, Florida where I would stay with Frank and Betty Parker during the rest of the time I would be in Florida. On Friday night, we went to the gospel meeting in Auburndale. Tom Holland was the speaker. On Saturday, I had the opportunity to speak at a Sebring Youth devotional at Mike and Lydia Tubbs’ house.

The gospel meeting at Lake Placid began on Sunday morning. We had a good attendance in the morning. On Sunday evening, we still had a pretty good attendance. One unique aspect of this gospel meeting was that we had day services and night services. On Monday through Wednesday mornings, we discussed the topic, “Challenges We Face in Living the Transformed Life.”

The theme of the gospel meeting was: “Sound Doctrine.” All of the lessons were basic Bible truths to remind brethren and instruct non-members how to go to heaven. There were a few visitors from the community who attended these efforts. We also had good support from surrounding congregations. I am thankful I had the opportunity to conduct this gospel meeting and encourage the work in central Florida.

In addition to speaking for the gospel meeting, I also had the opportunity to do a Chinese Cultural Presentation to one of the classes at the Lake Placid Middle School. This is the school where Lydia Tubbs teaches. I am always happy to do that whenever I am visiting in any area in the states. Thanks to all the brethren in Florida (including a number of “snowbirds” [people from the northern part of the United States who live in Florida during the winter]) for their hospitality while I was in the Sunshine State. It was great to see Robert and Susanna Austin again. I met them for the first time in Murray, KY about four years ago. They have recently moved to Florida.

I had a safe trip home from Florida on Jan. 29th. On the 30th and 31st, I had the opportunity to spend some more time with Kam Wah and Janet Leong before their return to Malaysia in early February. They spent the night on Friday night and we spent the day in Dahlonega, Georgia seeing some of the sights in the northern part of Georgia.

SYMPATHY: Our sympathy is expressed to Peter Chin, who’s father passed away in early January. His father was 96 years old.

NEW CONTACTS: Through World Video Bible School and Susanna Austin, I have had two individuals contact me in relation to the materials we have prepared to help Chinese people learn the gospel. One of the contacts is in the very northern part of Malaysia and the other one is in Beijing, China. We are thankful for the opportunities we have to help people around the world learn the truth of the gospel.

Planned Overseas Trips for 2015

I ended the year by giving a mission report at Chestnut Mountain Church in Georgia and the College Road Church in Palatka, Florida. It was good to be able to visit with the brethren at Palatka again. I also was able to spend the last week of the year with my good friends – Mike and Lydia Tubbs. With them, I had the opportunity to visit the four parks of Disney in Orlando, Florida. It was the first time I had been there since 1985. Two of the parks did not even exist then. The other parks have also made many changes. I am thankful for the hospitality they showed me for that week.

In January, I will be attending the Florida School of Preaching lectures, followed by a gospel meeting in Lake Placid, FL. Four overseas trips are planned for this New Year. Trips will include: New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China.

TEMPLES: A MONEY–MAKING OPERATION

One of the first things that tourists notice about Taiwan and the Far East in general is the over-abundance of temples. People are amazed that in spite of the poor economies, temples seem to thrive. (Note: Not all Asian economies are poor now.) One of the reasons there are so many temples is because they are money-making operations. They are built by the donations of worshippers, and they are able to operate because of the contributions made by those who are wishing to avoid bad luck and secure good luck

We cannot compare our congregations with number of temples, because we are not in the money-making business. We are trying, to the best of our ability, to preach the gospel in its purity and simplicity. We also make no charge to those who receive it. Because we are not in the money-making business, we must continue to depend upon our brethren to supply our needs. (See 3 John 5-8.)

There are so many people who need to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is up to all of us to see that they get that opportunity. Remember that about 60% of the world’s population is in Asia. Even though the cost of taking the gospel gets more expensive every year, we must still fulfill the great commission to take the gospel to the whole world (Mark 16:15-16; Matthew 28:19-20). JMG.

Asian Trip – Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia

On November 12th, I left the United States on my 54th mission trip. I took a similar route on this trip with one little difference. Normally, I fly though Japan then on to Singapore. This time, after arriving in Singapore, I spent the night in the Transit Hotel, then the next morning, flew on to Jakarta. Upon arrival in Jakarta, Timbul Siriat met me, and together we flew on to Lampung, where Barry Hatcher and Alex Daniel met us at the airport. From take-off in Atlanta to touchdown in Lampung was forty-two hours. While in Lampung, I stayed at the home of Alex and Rita Daniel. I am so thankful for their hospitality.

On the flight from Atlanta to Tokyo, I was on the same plane with Tim Wilkes II, his family, and a team of workers heading for Philippines.

I was able to get up on Saturday morning and walk with Alex Daniel. I am still not 100% with my knee, but I am trying to continue to get back to my normal walking distance and speed. I was able to walk almost every morning I was in Indonesia. I kept increasing the speed (ha-ha) and distance every day.

On Sunday, I preached at two congregations in Tanjungkarang. First, I spoke at the church that meets in the Astoria Hotel. They have only been meeting for a few months. Then, I spoke at the Pelita Baru congregation. This congregation is in another section of the town. There are nine congregations in Lampung Province in Sumatra, Indonesia.

On Monday I began the classes at the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy teaching the teachers on the subject of “Denominational Doctrines.” This class met every morning, Monday through Friday, during the time I was there. In the afternoon, we traveled out into the country to have services at the Natar Church of Christ. On Tuesday morning, we continued our classes at the school. In the evening, I spoke at the Pelita Baru congregation.

We continued our studies on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. On Wednesday night, I spoke at the Bible class at the school. On Thursday evening, the staff of the school and I had dinner together. It was great to have time to be with the staff and to enjoy their fellowship. Then, on Friday morning we finished the series. We had to do the last half of the class in another room because the power went off in the library and there were no windows to let in the light.

I had a great week with the brethren in Sumatra. I hope that much good was done. I look forward to returning sometime in the future. This is a great work and worthy of support. Please continue to remember this work in your prayers.

On Saturday morning, Alex Daniel, Barry Hatcher and I boarded a plane to fly to Jakarta. After arriving at the hotel, Barry and I met up with Jacob Susetyo who took us to dinner. On Sunday morning we went to the Sunter Church of Christ for worship and Bible study. There was a very good attendance with a few visitors present. On Sunday afternoon, we ate lunch with some of the brethren, then went to do some shopping.

Monday was our free day and our last day in Indonesia. This was a day to get caught up on work that had been put off and also a time to pick up a few needed items before moving on to Singapore. Thanks to the brethren in Jakarta for all of their help while we were there.

On Tuesday morning, we left for the International Airport in Jakarta to head for the island of Singapore. We landed safely in Singapore and got settled in for the upcoming lectureship at Four Seas College.

The 7th Annual Four Seas College Lectures began on Wednesday. I had the privilege to have a part in three different sessions of the lectureship. The theme was: “The Spirit and His Sword.” There were a number of speakers from America and several Asian-Pacific countries. A number of excellent lessons were delivered from Wednesday through Saturday.

I had a special topic to cover in my lesson. I discussed the “Chinese Bible – Translations and Problems.” Even though I was not the best qualified person to cover this subject, I did the very best I could. I also did a field report on the work in Taiwan. Even though I have not lived there for over twenty-two years, I do make annual trips to the island. I then had the privilege to be on a Question and Answer panel with Roger Campbell.

It was good to visit with all of the brethren who attended the lectureship. It was great to renew old friendships and also to make new friends. We are thankful for the good work the College is doing in Asia.

On Sunday, November 30th, I made a short trip into Malaysia. On Sunday morning, In Johor Bahru, I preached a bi-lingual lesson in two parts. In the afternoon, a group from the congregation drove to Kluang. We distributed brochures for the two bi-lingual lessons to be taught on Monday. Kluang is the home of brother Tee and also the home of brother David Chew.

This was the third time I had traveled to Kluang to try to encourage the church there. Because of brethren from Johor Bahru and Singapore, we had 31 to attend the afternoon session and 34 attended the evening class. The brethren in Johor Bahru are going to be assisting the church in Kluang, trying to help the church there to grow and develop.

This was a little bit different than my normal trip as I went to three countries instead of one or two. I hope the efforts we made we help to encourage the brethren in the places I visited. I am so thankful for all of the prayers offered on my behalf as well.

I arrived home safely with a very uneventful trip back from Singapore. I was able to get some sleep on the two flights and have been able to sleep at least six hours for the first four nights since arriving home. In spite of the cold weather (compared to the weather at the equator), I have been able to continue my walking outside. I do not know how much longer that will last with the cold weather on the way. I will do the best I can. If it is cold or rainy, I will walk inside the mall.

I am sorry this December report is a few days late. The January report will also be a few days late as well. I will be away from home for the first few days of the new year.

October Activities

On October 4th, I left for Lubbock, Texas to participate in the annual lectureship at the Southside Church of Christ. This was the fourth time I had the privilege to speak on this lectureship. It was great to see many old friends and to make some new friends as well. Thanks to Tom and Sue Hicks for the great work they do in this effort with the cooperation of all of the members at Southside. The theme of the lectureship was “Male and Female Created He Them.” I appreciate the hospitality shown to me while I was in Lubbock.

On October 12th, I had the privilege to present two lessons at the Chestnut Mountain congregation. I always appreciate the chance to preach the gospel to the congregation that oversees my work. During the last quarter of this year, I am sharing the teaching of the auditorium class at Chestnut Mountain. Ron Cope and I are sharing the duties.

Before my next speaking appointment at the Southeast Georgia Lectures in Richmond Hill, Georgia, I worked on finalizing the lessons I would be presenting in Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia during my next overseas trip beginning November 12th.

It was a privilege to have a part in the lectureship in Richmond Hill. Thanks to Riley Nelson and the brethren there for inviting me to speak. It was good to get to hear a number of other speakers discussing the first eight chapters of the Book of Romans.

2014 Taiwan Trip
As scheduled, I left for Taiwan on September 3rd for my 53rd mission trip. The trip was mostly uneventful and we even arrived in Taiwan one hour earlier than scheduled. Brother Jao met me at the airport and drove me the short distance to the High Speed Rail station in Taoyuan. I took the train down to Taichung where I would begin the efforts on this trip. I had to stand up for the trip to Taichung, but since it was only a thirty minute train ride, it was not too bad. Brother and sister Yo met me at the Taichung station and I went back to their house to get my luggage arranged and get my first night sleep in Taiwan.

Last year, I went to Singapore and Malaysia with a broken foot. Earlier this year I had to have surgery done on that foot. On my mission trip in June, I hurt my knee while exercising and I have been putting up with the pain since then. Because of the travel and climbing the stairs in Taichung, both the apartment and church building were on the fourth floor of their respective buildings (also heavy luggage), I aggravated the knee injury. Stairs (five floors) had to be climbed in Hualien as well, but in Taichung, I already figured out a way to go up and down the stairs without causing much pain or further injury. I went to the doctor when I got home and had a cortisone shot and was told to ice my knee six to eight times a day and start doing exercises to strengthen the muscles around my knee.

The first day of the gospel meeting began on Friday, my first full day in Taiwan. In the morning, we ran some errands and got my phone ready for use while in Taiwan. William Chen arrived in Taichung for the first night of the gospel meeting. It was good to meet him on the other side of the world again. I would be seeing him at the end of this trip for a gospel meeting conducted in his house. We had about 25 to attend the first night. There were some first time visitors who attended the meeting.

On Saturday, we spent the day visiting both in the assisted living home and other places. We had lunch with one of the members and her aunt. In the evening, we had five visitors to attend and because the lesson I had selected would not be the best lesson for them, I changed my topic. Jude also did this (Jude 3). There were about 23 who attended on Saturday night.

On Sunday morning, we completed the gospel meeting in Taichung. There was an good turnout for the last service of the meeting. Again, there were visitors present for these last two lessons in the meeting. It was encouraging during this gospel meeting to see that Christy Huang had recently been restored to the church and was present at every service. She was a member in the Changhua congregation many years ago. Her husband is not yet a Christian, but it is hoped through the efforts of the church in Taichung, he will come to the knowledge of the truth.

On Sunday night, the church had a cook-out for the Autumn Festival. More than twenty brethren and friends attended this event. It was held on the roof of the church building. Monday was the actual holiday, so on that day, brother and sister Yo and I did some sightseeing in the area. In the evening, we had dinner with Tracy, Jarod, Tasha, and Candy Brzozowski.

On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to visit with the oldest member in Taichung, brother Jang. He took us to a restaurant for lunch. Later in the day, we were able to visit with the aunt and parents of one of the members of the Taichung church.

On Wednesday morning, I packed up my luggage to prepare for an afternoon train trip (five hours) to Hualien to teach there. Before going to Hualien, I went with brother Yo to teach at the prison. This is the prison where Roger Campbell and I taught for a number of years before turning the work over to brother Yo. He has continued this work for an additional twenty plus years. There were 175 prisoners in the class. We sowed the seed as best we could. I also had the opportunity to eat a bowl of my favorite beef noodles soup before heading for the train station. I was able to sleep for part of the trip on the train. Upon arrival, brother Wang took me for a quick bowl of my favorite wonton soup before going to the church building for Wednesday evening Bible class. I spoke on the subject of Barnabas. I finally got settled in about 11 PM. (Wow, two bowls of my favorite soup on the same day! I do not actually drink the soup, but just eat what is in it.)

On Thursday morning, we left the building at 8 AM for the Assisted Living Home. I taught a Bible class there. There were more than forty who attended this class. The majority of those who attend are members of the church. In the afternoon, we went to the second Senior Citizen Center to conduct a Bible class. I taught a different lesson in the afternoon class. In the evening, we started the gospel meeting in Hualien. There were between 20-25 to attend this first session.

Friday morning started off pretty much the same way as Thursday. We made another trip to the Senior Citizen’s Home for private Bible studies and visits of members and prospects. After lunch, we made another visit to one of the new members of the church in Hualien who just happens to be ninety years old. Friday night was the second night of the gospel meeting. Even though we did not have a large number to attend, we did have some visitors to attend.

On Saturday night, we had our best turnout for the gospel meeting with about 26 in attendance. This includes a number of visitors who attended.

Sunday was a last busy day in Hualien. It started out at 5:55 AM. We headed for the first Assisted Living home for their morning worship. I spoke at this worship service. After conducting services with the brethren there, we headed to the church building for Bible study and worship. I spoke at both the Bible study and worship service. We had about 25 to attend the Sunday morning services at the church building. In the afternoon we headed for the other assisted living home where I taught about the same lesson I had taught at the morning assisted living session. We had 18 for the afternoon class. There are never as many in that class.

On Monday morning, brother Wang and I boarded a train for Taipei then transferred to the High Speed Rail train for Tainan. On Monday and Tuesday nights, I taught some of the brethren and friends in Tainan. During the day on Tuesday, we made several visits/Bible studies.

On Wednesday morning, I headed to Taipei for the last part of my trip. Many of you already know that William and Yolanda Chen have finished their studies at Southwest School of Bible Studies and have moved back to Taiwan. It was my privilege to participate in a gospel meeting conducted in their home the last weekend I was in Taiwan. These were the first services conducted in the Chen’s apartment.

On the first night of the gospel meeting, nine people were in attendance. We had eight to attend the second evening. On Sunday, we had seventeen to attend the first Lord’s Day worship service at the new location. I am thankful I had the opportunity to have a small part in this effort.

During this trip I spoke about twenty times plus private Bible studies and visits. Thanks for all of your prayers for me during this trip. Please continue to pray for the brethren in Taiwan. We are thankful for the progress in the work there.

Grubb Mission Report - September 2014

Gospel Meetings in Indiana – Terre Haute and Coal City

During the middle of August, I made a ten day journey to my home state, Indiana. While I was there, I conducted two gospel meetings and was able to celebrate my mom’s 90th birthday. During the time I was there, I was able to visit with my mom and go with her to various places. On Saturday, the day following my mom birthday, we had a party for her. There were a number of people who attended the afternoon celebration, including her life-long friend, Imogene Hann, from Obetz, Ohio. Thanks to Pat Johnson for making the effort to bring Imogene to the party. My youngest son, Sam, flew up for the weekend to attend the party.

The first gospel meeting was at my home congregation in Terre Haute. The meeting was Sunday – Wednesday. The theme of the meeting was “Basics.” This was the first gospel meeting I had ever conducted at my home congregation. Even though the attendance was not very good, we did have a number of visitors to attend from sister congregations and some area visitors.

On the day between the two gospel meetings, I took mom back down to Vincennes to visit the Red Skelton museum. We had visited there last year, but since then they had added a new section of his radio and movie careers.

The second gospel meeting was a weekend meeting at the Coal City Church of Christ. I have held a gospel meeting there before and also have given mission reports there. The attendance for the meeting was pretty good with sister congregations supporting the meeting. On Sunday, after the morning services, they had a basket dinner and a singing service followed by an afternoon worship service to conclude the meeting.

After the afternoon service, I drove to Indianapolis, picked up my son, Sam, at my daughter-in-law’s house and we went to the evening service at Shelbyville Rd. It was good to see the brethren there again. Being Hoosiers (from the state of Indiana) and also Indianapolis Colts (NFL) fans, Sam and I had planned to tour the Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis before flying back to Atlanta. However, tours are only conducted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On the flight home, there were storms in Atlanta that shut down the airport for a while, so we circled around for a while before safely landing and making it back home. Thanks again for your prayers on our behalf.

Taiwan Trip – This Month

I am scheduled to leave for Taiwan on September 3rd. I will be visiting with the brethren in four different cities on the island. I will be giving a full report in the next Grubb Mission Report. Please pray for the efforts made during this trip. William and Yolanda Chen will also be back in Taiwan. I hope to see them at the end of the trip.
