June Projects and Events
I returned home from my 59th overseas mission trip on June 6th. I spent the first few days getting over jet lag and catching up with five weeks’ worth of stateside work. On June 15th, I went to see the orthopedic doctor and he said my foot as healed enough to take off the air cast. I was happy to get out of the boot. Thanks for all of your prayers for me during this period of my foot healing.
Just ten days after returning to the states, I was on the road again. I headed for Indiana to conduct a gospel meeting with the Coal City church of Christ in west central Indiana. While I was in the area, I was able to visit with my mother. She is doing about the same.
We had a good meeting with good interest shown by those who attended. I was able to see a friend from my youth while in Coal City. Ronda (Reid) Wolf was visiting her parents, Bob and Georgia Reid. I had not seen her for about forty years. It was good to be able to catch up with her and her husband, A.J. Some of the members from the nearby Clay City church also attended the meeting. The lessons were taped.
Immediately after the meeting, I drove up to Angola, IN to speak at the Shelbyville Rd. church camp conducted at Camp Indogan. When I lived in Indiana, I had a regular part in this camp. I had the privilege to speak at the Wednesday night service.
I returned home on June 23rd, and had the opportunity to spend the day on June 25th with Kam Wah and Janet Leong, Beverly and Jonah Baldwin. Also, June 25th was the birthday for my maternal grandfather and anniversary for my maternal grandparents, Clarence and Pearl Bennett. Grandpa was born in 1891 and they were married in 1914.

ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
“Onward Christian Soldiers” was written in 1865 by an English clergyman. It was originally written for children to sing while marching between villages. It has become one of the most popular songs in the religious world. In this article we will look at the lessons found in the three words of the title of this song.
The Bible encourages the people of God to go forward. “And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward” (Ex. 14:15). This statement is made to the Israelites on the banks of the Red Sea. The sea was parted and the children of God escaped Egyptian bondage. The Christian is urged to “press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14). God’s people are admonished to “always abound in the work of the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58).
The word Christian literally means “belonging to Christ.” When we obey the gospel we are baptized into the ownership of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:18-20); we are bought with a price (1 Cor. 6:19-20); which is the shed blood of Christ (1 Pet. 1:18-19). In becoming a Christian we choose Christ as our Lord and Master, and we become an obedient servant. In going forward as Christians, we obey the commands of Christ in every area of our life. Our ultimate reward is heaven (Heb. 5:8-9; 11:13-16; 4:11).
The Bible is full of references to children of God being soldiers. In this article we are discussing “Christian soldiers.” Paul wrote to Timothy, “Fight the good fight of faith” (1 Tim. 6:12), “endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ” (2 Tim. 2:3), “no man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier” (2 Tim. 2:4). Paul also urges the Christian soldier to “put on the whole armor of God” (Eph. 6:10-17).
Unfortunately, some Christian soldiers do not move forward, but retreat and desert to the enemy. We either serve Christ or the Devil (Matt. 6:24). Deserters must be court-martialed (2 Thes. 3:6,14-15; 1 Tim. 5:20; Tit. 3:10-11; Acts 5:1-11; 1 Cor. 5:1-13; Rom. 16:17-18; 2 John 9-11).

Indonesia and
the Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship
On May 4th I departed for a five week
trip to Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. This was my 59th mission trip. And
as I did a few years ago, I made this trip with a broken foot. Only this time,
it is my left foot that is broken.
In spite of the long trip with my boot, I
made the trip pretty well. My foot did swell a bit, but after my first night’s
sleep in Indonesia it looked a lot better.
Denpasar, Bali
Alex Daniel met me outside of customs at
the International airport in Denpasar, Bali. The traffic was pretty bad there,
so it took quite a while to get to the hotel and try to get settled in. Before
we could do that, we had to leave for the evening class at the Denpasar
congregation.
The theme of the trips around Indonesia
was “Basic Facts of the Faith.” The first time I taught this material in
Indonesia was in 1989 or 1990 at the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy when it was
located in Gisting, Sumatra.
While in Denpasar, I had the privilege to
teach four lessons to the brethren there. On Monday morning, we boarded a plane
to head to Surabaya. Traffic in Surabaya
was just as bad as Bali traffic. On the way to Surabaya, my phone died. I went
to buy a new one (as cheaply as possible) to use.
Surabaya
Classes were conducted on Tuesday and
Wednesday evening. We had about thirty to attend the Tuesday evening class.
There was good interest and several questions were asked during the question
and answer session. There were also two new Bible studies set up as a result of
the Wednesday night class.
Sunter, Jakarta
On Thursday, we left for Jakarta. On
Friday night, we had a Q&A with those members who were able to attend. On
Saturday, we met from 10 AM to 4 PM studying Romans chapter 12. We would have a
Q&A after each study session. On Sunday, the Block M congregation joined
the Sunter congregation for worship, Bible study, lunch, Bible study, and
Q&A. About 100 were in attendance for the Sunday services.
Thanks to Jacob and Kim Susetyo for all
of their help and good work. It was good to get to know the members in Jakarta.
Manado, Suluwesi
On Monday, May 16th, we flew to Manado to
begin a week long effort with the church there. A great place to eat fish is in
Manado. I ate tuna. In fact, I ate fish
at least once a day while in Manado.
On Tuesday through Saturday, we met each
night (except for Friday) in classes and singing training. I had the privilege
to meet with two different congregations in the Manado area. On Friday we were
taken into the mountains to visit various sites (including an active volcano).
We were able to visit with several of the members while we there and answer
many of their Bible questions.
On Saturday afternoon we went to eat
lunch with Mike Rotinsulu, the mother of the Rotinsulu boys. That evening we
conducted classes for over three hours at the Suwaan congregation. On Sunday
morning, Alex returned there to teach and preach while I went back to the
Manado congregation for Sunday services.
On Monday morning, we headed for the
airport to begin our trip to Lampung, Sumatra. We finally arrived there about
5:15 PM.

On Tuesday through Friday mornings, I
taught from 8 AM until noon at the school. It had been over 25 years since I
had taught “Basic Facts of the Faith” at the school, so that is the material I
taught this trip. Of course, 25 years of experience added to the original
material. I am going to revise the material and they are going to translate it
and put it in print for use among the students and prospects.
Each evening, I preached at a different
congregation in the province. On Tuesday night, I spoke at the TanjungKarang
congregation. Wednesday night, I was at the Pelita Baru congregation. On
Thursday night, we traveled to Uwe Slawe to conduct a one night service there.
There was a good number who attended this service. They were there waiting for
us when we arrived. I had a different translator each night of these meetings
and they did a good job of translating.
Batam
On Saturday, May 28th, Timbul Siriat and
I traveled to Batam for my last stop on this trip in Indonesia. Several of the
staff and students went with us to the airport to see us off. We arrived safely
in Batam, was met by one of the brethren and went to the hotel to rest before
the Bible class on Saturday night.
We had good sessions on Sunday morning
for Bible study, worship, lunch, a presentation about the school by Timbul,
then finally a question and answer session to finish the day. Monday evening
was another wonderful three hour session of lesson and question and answer
session.
They had asked me about coming back and
Timbul had mentioned it would probably be in two years. When I thought about
how close it is to Singapore and how easy it is to get to Batam from Singapore,
I mentioned that I should be able to come back next year for another weekend.
This was after the sessions were ended for the night. I was shocked and
surprised when all of the members broke out in applause.
On Tuesday morning, I departed Batam by
ferry and headed to Singapore. This was the first time I had used this method
to enter Singapore. I spent the day on Tuesday getting settled in to my room,
met one of the members for tea, and organized my luggage for the upcoming trip
to Malaysia.
On Wednesday, the skies opened and I was
kept in my room for most of the day. On Wednesday evening, I traveled to the
Jurong congregation to attend midweek Bible study.
On Thursday morning, I went back to
Jurong to ride their bus to the Chinese lectures site. I was the first speaker
on the program and then was on the panel for the question and answer session.
The Chinese lectures continued all day
Friday and through lunchtime on Saturday. There were a total of ten different
speakers with three question and answer sessions. On Friday evening, I also
spoke to the English Bible class for the local Melaka congregation and several
other English speaking visitors from around Asia also attended. There were
between 175 and 200 Chinese people attending this event. There were two baptisms
on Friday afternoon. I returned to Singapore arriving late Saturday night.
On my last day in Asia, I spoke at a
Bible class and preached in worship at the English congregation of the Jurong
church of Christ. In the afternoon, I taught the Chinese Bible class at the Lim
Ah Pin congregation.
Early Monday morning (June 6th), I flew
back to the U.S. and arrived safely back home. I am so thankful for all of the
prayers, assistance, and hospitality of all who helped make this trip possible.
My
next overseas trip is scheduled for August 24th – October 10th. I will be
traveling to Taiwan and China at that time. In between now and then, I have
four separate trips I will be making here in the states.

April
Events
Tickets have now been booked for my trips
to Taiwan/China and Singapore/Malaysia later this year. I am also looking at
the schedule for my first trip in 2017. Plans are for me to arrive in New
Zealand on February 2nd to make efforts among several churches on
the north island. Please pray for the efforts I am able to make to help spread
the gospel of Christ. At the end of March I had the privilege to attend the
Memphis School of Preaching Lectures and then made a trip to Indiana to visit
my mother and some of my grandchildren. I also had the opportunity to speak at
the Clay City Church of Christ to give a report of my work. In the middle of
the month, I traveled to World Video Bible School to film an English-Chinese
video for distribution. I will let you know when it is available on YouTube and
DVD.
On April 6th, I broke my left
foot. Please remember me as I travel the next two months with a walking boot. Thanks to everyone for your prayers, notes, cards, and good thoughts on my behalf.

Barnabas –
A Great
Encourager
in the Church
The reason he was given this
name is because that is what he did! He encouraged individuals – Paul, John
Mark, and others. The modern term we use today is “mentoring.” He encouraged
benevolence (Acts 4:36-37; 11:27-30). Some think he is the one referenced by the
apostle Paul (2 Corinthians 8:18-19). He encouraged congregations in their
development and spiritual growth – Antioch, Jerusalem, Asia Minor, Cyprus. He
encouraged elders (Acts 14:23). Paul uses Barnabas as an example of one who
supported himself in the preaching of the gospel (1 Corinthians 9:6).
He stood up for the right of
the Gentiles to obey the gospel and helped to show people are no longer under
the Law of Moses (Acts 15:4,12). NOTE: Gentiles were never under the
Law of Moses (Galatians 3:7-29). We know later on, Barnabas was
influenced by others to separate himself from the Gentiles (Galatians 2:1-16).
This example shows the possibility of sinning (1 Corinthians 10:12). May we
have the kind of heart and follow the example of Barnabas in repenting when we
sin. We do that because we believe Jesus Christ is Deity.
We recognize the example
Barnabas has set for us today (1 Corinthians 11:1). He was generous (Acts
4:36-37). He was not like Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11). He was willing to
dig deep when others were in need – selling his land to help the work of the
church.
He saw the best in others
such as Saul of Tarsus and John Mark (2 Timothy 4:11). He was willing to step
aside to let others shine. Just like John the Baptist did with the Messiah (Jn.
3:30). First, it was Barnabas and Saul and then it became Paul and Barnabas. He
was a faithful brother and friend. He was a faithful proclaimer of the gospel.
He was preaching the gospel before he met Saul. He preached alongside of the
apostle Paul. He continued preaching after Paul and he separated. – JMG.

from Around the World
TERRE HAUTE, IN: Please continue to remember my mother in
prayer. She remains in the nursing home and is about the same.
MEMPHIS, TN: Sympathy to the
Ted Clarke family at loss of his wife in early March. This is the mother of
B.J. Clarke. Please keep the Clarke family in prayer.
CINCINNATI, OH: We recently learned of the passing of Hazel
Powell. She passed away on January 9th. She was one of my long-time supporters.
She will be missed.

readers do not know of the ten years spent in Taiwan as a missionary. I hope
you enjoy these glimpses into our past efforts in the mission field. JMG).
THE TRIP ACROSS
THE ISLAND
Back during the 1980’s, the brethren in
Taiwan conducted a camp during Chinese New Year vacation. This was the best time to conduct the camp
because not only are students out of school, but those who work at jobs are off
also. The bad part was: it was the worst time of the year for traveling. The
traffic was terrible.
Many of the brethren from the west side of
the island rode the train over to Hualien, but I chose not to use that method
as I was afraid it would be difficult to buy tickets, plus there are so many
who ride the trains who do not have seats, so they sit on the arm of your seat
or lean on the back of your seat. I decided to drive across the island.
From Taichung, one of the ways to drive to
Hualien is on the Cross-island highway. To use the word highway in reference to
this road is kind of misleading. It is much like a county road in the US. It is
about 140 miles from Taichung to Hualien. The only catch: you have to cross the
mountains. (This road was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1999 and
parts of it have never been repaired.)
Normally, the trip takes about seven or
eight hours. We had made the trip during the summer of 1987. However, in making
the trip this time, it took eleven hours – because of Chinese New Year! When we
were coming back, we thought it would be better. It wasn’t! It took us fourteen
hours to get home. The traffic was terrible. An additional reason for the
delays was it had snowed in the mountains and people were trying to get up
there to see it. So, the only good part was that we got to see frost and snow
flurries on the way home. Snow was visible on the mountains peaks.
