Grubb Mission Report - August 2015

The last weekend in July, I traveled to the St. Louis area and spoke at the St. Peters, MO congregation. On Sunday night, I visited with the Collinsville, IL congregation. I was able to attend the 50th wedding anniversary party for Bill and Judy Schwegler as well.

COME ON IN, THE WATER’S FINE
Romans 10:15

The need for preachers is great. Our present preacher shortage is undeniable and the supply of faithful gospel preachers continues to shrink each year. When we compare the number of men now preaching with the ever-increasing world population, we see the enormity of our task. Do we have an impossible task before us? Absolutely not! (Philippians 4:13).

The Local Evangelist

Someone has rightly said, “when you get a good preacher, you had better keep him.” A sound preacher and a good worker is getting harder and harder to find. In the minds of many members, preachers have a soft life. The concept is set forth that preachers are paid too much for too little work. The truth is: “you cannot pay a good preacher too much, and anything you pay a bad preacher is too much!” Some think the only reason men choose to preach is because they cannot do anything else. If a man is a good preacher he preaches because he cannot keep from it. Someone said, “if anything can keep you from preaching, then do not preach.” This is the kind of dedication a man needs to meet the challenge of the work.

If preaching is such an easy life with such outstanding pay and fringe benefits, why is there such a critical shortage? To those who believe preaching is “a piece of cake,” I would say, “come on in, the water’s fine.” There is plenty of room for you.

The Foreign Evangelist

When we turn our thoughts to the foreign mission fields, the words of our Lord come to mind (John 4:35).
Not only does the foreign evangelist have to deal with most of the problems and frustrations of the local evangelist, including having to deal with false doctrines and false teachers, he has a multitude of additional problems. There is the constant concern about keeping up his support, learning a new language, and adjusting to a new culture. He has to worry about his family adjusting as well. The family is separated from the extended family and friends by thousands of miles and at least one ocean. All of these things add to the burden of the missionary.

While he is agonizing over the millions of souls that have not yet had the opportunity to hear the gospel even one time, there are those back home who say, “Boy, it must be nice to go over to another country for a two or three year vacation.” Once again we answer, “come on in, the water's fine.”  Go to Europe, England, China, Africa, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Japan, or Taiwan for the next ten years or so. With so few missionary families in the field, we can certainly use you.

The Responsibility

Who has the responsibility to solve this critical preacher shortage in the world? Paul tells us the church is the “pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). We need elders who have the faith and vision to encourage young men to prepare to preach the gospel. We need men who desire to enter the greatest field of labor in existence. We need parents who will rear their children with evangelism in mind. One of the causes of the shortage of preachers has been parents who have discouraged their sons from preparing to preach because they want them to be “successful.” Do they want them to be successful like the rich men described in the New Testament? (Luke 12:15-21; 16:19-31; Mark 10:17-22). There is no greater success than faithfully serving the Lord (2 Timothy 4:7-8). Until the church fulfills its responsibility, we will continue to have this problem.

Seven Billion Souls

There are billions of people who have never had the opportunity to hear the gospel of Christ. They will be lost if we do not reach them with the truth (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). “For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14-15).

May each one of us recognize our responsibility to get the gospel message to the world.  Come on in, the water’s fine! JMG.

News and Letters from Around the World

CLAY CITY, IN: During the month of June, Wanda Francis, wife of Bill Francis, mother of David Francis and Janell Grafe, passed away after a lengthy illness. I have known the Francis family since I preached at Clay City back in the mid-1970’s. They were thoughtful enough to ask for brethren to contribute to our work in lieu of flowers. At this writing, the following contributions have been made in memory of sister Wanda: Gordon Wells – $50.00; Willis Dyer – $100.00.

LAKE PLACID, FL: “It has been a long while since I have emailed you. We trust that all continues to go well with you and your work for the Lord. Grace Pan continues with her Bible study through IBTM with me. I just wanted you to know that our Daughter, Jane and her husband in Safford, AZ used your lesson you presented here at the Lake Placid, FL congregation – to put the finishing touches on two people they had been studying with. “Prepare To Meet Thy God” when they were finished Jane asked them if they were prepared to meet  God and he said “no momma” and she said “no momma.” They were both baptized and they and their two children now worship with our daughter’s family. They meet in their home as no faithful congregation near. The new couple is studying and getting “grounded” They have a long way to go but have good hearts and working hard to learn. We are thankful for your lessons and the fruit they have been bring forth the world over. May God continue to bless you with good health and stamina to do the work” –Bob and Susanna Austin. (NOTE:  We are thankful for the good work the Austins do in the Kingdom. We are also thankful for the good news in this note. JMG).

MEMPHIS, TN: It was my honor and privilege to speak at the 2015 Memphis School of Preaching graduation. There were twenty five students who received diplomas from one of the programs at MSOP. My lesson was entitled: “Remembering Who We Are.”

GREETINGS: It was good to hear from various brethren from the other side of the world: Sam Chan (Ipoh, Malaysia), Glen Tattersall, Steve and Beckie Schiller (Launceston, Tasmania, Australia), and Rosita Hunt (Toowoomba, Australia).

KAMPAR, MALAYSIA: News has reached us via Facebook that one of the visitors who attended the gospel meeting there in May has obeyed the gospel (Katie Ooi). We are thankful for the follow-up being done by the brethren in Ipoh and the Klang valley.

UPDATE ON KEITH YOUNG: “Update on Keith. He was running a low grade fever and doctor had him come in. Some labs were out of range. An ultrasound showed fluid behind the transplant surgery incision for the second time. They drained off fluid week before last but found no infection. Today the fluid was infected. They put in a drain tube but the surgeon says there is a good chance they will have to open the incision in the OR tomorrow and clean it to remove the infection. The wound would be packed until it heals inside to out. He has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. These are things that can occur after transplant surgery. Thank you friends for your concern and prayers” – Louella Young. (NOTE: Thanks to his mother for this update. I have known Keith for most of his life. He had a kidney transplant earlier this year. Please continue to pray for him and his family. JMG.)

BAPTISM: On July 3rd, Aiden Heilman, son of Theresa and Michael Heilman, and grandson of Howard and Margaret Goodman, made the decision to obey the gospel. I was thankful I was in town so that I was able to attend. Thanks to Stan Quinn for his assistance in helping Aiden to become a Christian.

MISSION TRIPS: There are currently a number of brethren who are making mission trips in all parts of the world. Please continue to remember all of our brethren who are traveling around the world to help spread the gospel of Christ. We continue to be thankful for being able to have a part in helping to spread the gospel around the world.

2015 Malaysia Trip

On May 19th, I left for Malaysia. This was my 56th overseas mission trip since 1985. I actually flew into and out of Singapore, as is my habit. I do that because of the lower cost and shorter travel time. I had an uneventful trip from Atlanta to Singapore.

Before leaving for Malaysia, I was able to have lunch with Eddy Ee and Jedediah Yuan. That evening, I attended the English Bible class at Lim Ah Pin. On Friday morning, I rode an Aero Line Bus to One Utama in the Klang area. Peter Bang met me and got me settled in my hotel room. On Friday night, I spoke at the Section 17 Bible class. It was good to see so many good friends and brethren there.

On Saturday afternoon, Kam Wah Leong took me over to the hotel where I would stay one night while presenting three lessons at the KL church. The topics were the same as the ones I would use for the bi-lingual gospel meeting in Kampar. I only used English to present the lessons at KL.

After morning Bible study and worship at KL on Sunday, Chris Lopez and I rode a train to Kampar for the week long effort there. I spoke Sunday evening at the regular worship service there. After services, I made my way to my fourth different bed in five days.

On Monday and Tuesday mornings, I joined the other brethren who gathered in Kampar to distribute advertisements for the Thursday through Saturday bi-lingual gospel meeting. A total of 20,000 ads saturated the area. Also, newspaper ads were run the week of the gospel meeting.

The gospel meeting began on Thursday night. There were fifty people who attended the first night. Among those who attended were several from the community. On Friday night, there were sixty in attendance, again with several visitors from the community. On the last night of the gospel meeting, we had our best attendance of the meeting. We had 75 in attendance with 15 visitors from the community. At the end of the service, I went to stay the night in Ipoh in preparation for morning Bible study and worship on Sunday morning. We had a combined English and Chinese service and I delivered two bi-lingual lessons for Bible study and worship. There were a number of visitors present.

On Sunday afternoon, we headed back to Kampar for the Sunday evening worship service there. I preached another bi-lingual lesson there. We had a Bible study with two of the many visitors that attended the gospel meeting. During the study, she started quoting one of my sermons word for word! Sometimes you wonder if people are listening to your lessons. She was! There were 34 who attended the Sunday service in Kampar with several visitors.

Before heading for the Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship, two families from the Section 17 congregation took me up to Penang, Malaysia for a couple of days. There is a lot of British Colonial history in that city. Also one of the longest bridges in Asia – 23 kilometers long.

The 10th Annual Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship was conducted at the Pulai Springs Resort outside of Johor Bahru, Malaysia. There were twelve speakers and four answer panel sessions during the lectureship. There were brethren in attendance from China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, India, and the United States. There were approximately 200 people who attended at least one of the sessions during the lectureship. The 11th Annual CABL is scheduled to be conducted next June in Melaka, Malaysia.

On the Sunday following the CABL, I presented two lessons to the Section 17 congregation. I had the opportunity to meet some new families attending, including one family from Texas. During the time I was in Malaysia, if I had any down time, the Section 17 brethren took care of me. I really appreciate their hospitality.

The last weekend in Malaysia I was with the Sabang Jaya congregation for a bi-lingual gospel meeting. I presented a lesson in English and Chinese on Friday night and for worship on Sunday morning. Because there were no Chinese only speaking people present for the Sunday morning Bible study, I presented the last lesson in English only but with Chinese characters on the PowerPoint slides. Sunday afternoon, I flew back to Singapore to spend the night before heading back to the United States on Monday. I returned home safely on Monday afternoon. Thanks for all your prayers, support, and encouragement on this recent trip. My next overseas trip will be in September.

2015 Malaysia Trip

I am scheduled to depart for Malaysia on May 19th. This will be my 56th mission trip since 1985. I will actually be flying into and out of Singapore, as is my habit. I do that because of the lower cost and shorter travel time. I will be taking a bus to and from the Klang valley.

Before traveling to Malaysia, I spent a week to go up to Indiana to visit family. I stayed with my mother while I was there. While in Indiana, I visited with the brethren in Clay City and the Northside congregation in Terre Haute. On the last Wednesday night in April, I traveled to Bridgeport, Alabama. I did a presentation for the congregation there. Long-time friend, John O’Neal is the preacher there. Also members there are Danny and Betty Rader. They are the parents of Jeana O’Donnell, who lives in Foxton, New Zealand. I met the Raders when I was there in March. Danny asked me to come and talk about my work in Bridgeport. I was happy to do so.

The first week in May, I attended Focal Point, which is a work of the University Church of Christ in San Marcos, TX. Because this report is being printed before the event, I will have more to say about it in my June report.

(A NOTE FOR MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST) Help Send Lee Davis to Singapore!

Dear brethren,

I pray that this note finds you and your families doing well and your work for the Lord prospering! As some of you might know, I resigned from my local work of 10 years and am going back into full time missions. I am returning to Singapore to teach at Four Seas College. Lord willing, September will be the go date! If the Lord wills, we will be staying in Singapore full time. I am very much in need of monthly support but any help will be of great significance. Let's be workers together in the Cause of Christ in Southeast Asia! Be praying for us! Please make the checks out to:

Piedmont Road Church of Christ
“Lee Davis Mission Fund” or “Southeast Asian Missions”

Thank you so much for considering supporting the work we are doing for the Lord!

News and Letters from Around the World

QUITMAN, MS: “God bless you in your work throughout the world brother. So glad that New Zealand had the opportunity to get you. Wish I could have been there. You just witnessed a small taste of the hospitality of the brethren in NZ. They are one-of-a-kind. Hopefully, next time I'll be there as well doing some work and we can work together for a couple of days. You are in my prayers for travel and in your efforts” – Stephen Higley. (NOTE: We are thankful for the work Stephen and Hannah are doing in the kingdom. JMG.)

PRAYERS: We know of so many we need to remember in prayer each day. We remember those who are sick, in the hospital, shut-ins, receiving treatments, etc. There are families who are grieving over lost love ones or suffering because of problems or pressures in life. The recent disaster in Nepal and surrounding countries also elicit our prayers and help for those individuals. We continue to pray for our brethren around the world who are striving to proclaim the gospel of Christ in their respective countries. We pray for family, for governments, for leadership in the church, for the members of the church, for more workers in the kingdom, and the lost around the world. We are thankful for the use of social media to help us know of those who are in need of prayers. Let us all continue to pray to our Father in heaven who “is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20).

New Zealand Trip – For the First Time – March 11-April 8

As I begin the first of four overseas mission trips this year, I will be making my 55th trip since 1985. This was my first trip to New Zealand. In 1997 I transited through Auckland on my way to Australia. This time I went through Australia to go to New Zealand. It was the first time I actually was able to meet and work with the brethren there in the country.

The trip started out with a “glitch.” There was a miscommunication about my arrival date. Because of this, I missed the flight from Auckland to New Plymouth. Therefore, when I final arrived, I stayed the night in Auckland with Trevor and Chris Majors and was able to meet with some of the brethren from the South Auckland congregation.

On Saturday, instead of Friday, I flew down to New Plymouth from Auckland. During the time I was in New Plymouth, I enjoyed the hospitality and fellowship of the Herd family.

While in New Plymouth, I had the privilege to teach three lessons on Sunday, two in the morning and one in the evening. On Monday, I spent the day with the Herd family then had dinner with one of the families here in New Plymouth. Tuesday night, we had a Bible class at the Herd’s house. There were eighteen people who attended that night, including a husband and wife who are searching for the truth. On Wednesday night, I presented another lesson at the church building.

On Thursday, Chris Herd transported me down to Porirua to begin an effort with the church there and in Wellington. Lance and Kristen Mosher and John and Erin Jones are working together in these two congregations. I had the privilege to stay with Lance, Kristen, and Silas Mosher.

There had already been a great deal of preparation for the upcoming Chinese gospel meeting by the local brethren. On Friday and Saturday, Lance and I went around and visiting and inviting Chinese people to attend the upcoming gospel meeting. Friday was in Porirua and Saturday was in Porirua and Wellington. We also had the opportunity on Friday night to have dinner with John Jones’ parents and one of the Chinese families here in Porirua.

Sunday was a busy day. We started with Bible study and worship in Wellington. Then Sunday afternoon English worship in Porirua. The Chinese gospel meeting began on Sunday evening. There were two lessons on Sunday and two more lessons on Monday evening. I used the bi-lingual PowerPoint so those who did not speak Chinese could follow along in the lesson. There were several who benefited from that.

On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to do some sightseeing, eat lunch with the Wellington brethren, and have a part in the leadership meeting in Porirua that night.

On Wednesday, the Mosher’s took me to Palmerston North for a few days efforts. I had the opportunity to go around and look for some Chinese people and try to make contacts with them. I also had the opportunity to accompany the local brethren in Bible studies. On Wednesday night, I went to Foxton to teach the midweek Bible class. On Thursday, there was the first baptism as a result of the recent campaign in Palmerston North. David Pamata obeyed the gospel on Thursday. On Thursday, I spoke at the Palmerston North midweek class.

On Saturday, I flew from Palmerston North through Auckland to Hamilton. The flight was delayed then cancelled. I took a later flight to Auckland, but the last flight of the day for Hamilton had already departed. So they provided a free shuttle to Hamilton – 90 minutes away. I was impressed. James Cammock, the preacher in Hamilton (a graduate of Southwest School of Bible Studies) picked me up at the airport. I had the privilege to stay with the Neville and Lily Whittaker while I was in Hamilton. James and Emily have a new baby, Simon, and Emily’s mother, Imelda is staying with them to help out for a while. I delivered five lessons in three days in the gospel meeting there. In the reverse way, I used bi-lingual PowerPoint in Hamilton, speaking in English but having the Chinese on the screen for a Chinese family who attends. The wife, Helen, is a member, but her husband is not, and he speaks almost no English, so it was helpful to him. On Monday night, we had four Chinese speaking people in attendance on both Monday and Tuesday nights.

On the first day of April, I headed back to New Plymouth to spend my last week in New Zealand. On Wednesday night, I presented another lesson in the Bible class at New Plymouth. I am thankful for the hospitality of the Herd family while staying in New Plymouth.

The lectureship/camp began on Friday, April 3rd. This was the 25th anniversary of the camp. I spoke five times during the lectureship along with the other main speaker, Mike Vestal. We had almost two hundred in attendance for Sunday morning worship and Bible study. We were thrilled to have two baptisms during the camp. The fiancée of one of the Christians obeyed the gospel on Sunday. The husband of another Christian obeyed the gospel on Monday. We are thankful to have had a part in these results.

While in New Zealand, we were able to distribute several copies of William Chen’s DVD lesson on “What Must I Do to Go to Heaven.” I was amazed at the number of Chinese people living in New Zealand and having the opportunity to reach them with the gospel of Christ.

I was able to get back into a pretty good routine of walking while on the trip. There were only a few days I was not able to get my regular exercise.

I am thankful for all the prayers on my behalf during this initial trip to New Zealand. I hope to be able to make another trip in years to come and will spend more time in getting ready for the Chinese population living there.

Please continue to remember all of our brethren in New Zealand who are striving to help spread the gospel in that country. Also, remember the workers who travel from other countries to New Zealand to assist in their work.

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are laborers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:6-9).

A Month of Preparation

The month of February was a month of preparation for the trip to New Zealand and the speaking appointments I have there. I worked hard to get several PowerPoint lessons ready for the lectureship in New Plymouth and the Chinese gospel meeting scheduled in Porirua.

In addition to these lessons, I have been working on my assignments for the upcoming Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship and Gospel Meetings in Malaysia. I also had the privilege to teach the Wednesday night auditorium Bible class at Chestnut Mountain for about six weeks. Ron Cope and I share the duties, and I teach the class whenever I am home. Thanks to Ron for allowing me to help out with this class.

Florida – Lectureship and Gospel Meetings

On January 19th, I headed for Lakeland, Florida to attend the Florida School of Preaching Lectures which was held at the South Florida Avenue Church of Christ. The theme of the lectures was “The Sermon on the Mount.” There were many excellent lessons presented during the week. It was great to see so many preachers I have known through the years and to get to them preach again.

On Friday morning, I drove to Sebring, Florida where I would stay with Frank and Betty Parker during the rest of the time I would be in Florida. On Friday night, we went to the gospel meeting in Auburndale. Tom Holland was the speaker. On Saturday, I had the opportunity to speak at a Sebring Youth devotional at Mike and Lydia Tubbs’ house.

The gospel meeting at Lake Placid began on Sunday morning. We had a good attendance in the morning. On Sunday evening, we still had a pretty good attendance. One unique aspect of this gospel meeting was that we had day services and night services. On Monday through Wednesday mornings, we discussed the topic, “Challenges We Face in Living the Transformed Life.”

The theme of the gospel meeting was: “Sound Doctrine.” All of the lessons were basic Bible truths to remind brethren and instruct non-members how to go to heaven. There were a few visitors from the community who attended these efforts. We also had good support from surrounding congregations. I am thankful I had the opportunity to conduct this gospel meeting and encourage the work in central Florida.

In addition to speaking for the gospel meeting, I also had the opportunity to do a Chinese Cultural Presentation to one of the classes at the Lake Placid Middle School. This is the school where Lydia Tubbs teaches. I am always happy to do that whenever I am visiting in any area in the states. Thanks to all the brethren in Florida (including a number of “snowbirds” [people from the northern part of the United States who live in Florida during the winter]) for their hospitality while I was in the Sunshine State. It was great to see Robert and Susanna Austin again. I met them for the first time in Murray, KY about four years ago. They have recently moved to Florida.

I had a safe trip home from Florida on Jan. 29th. On the 30th and 31st, I had the opportunity to spend some more time with Kam Wah and Janet Leong before their return to Malaysia in early February. They spent the night on Friday night and we spent the day in Dahlonega, Georgia seeing some of the sights in the northern part of Georgia.

News and Letters from Around the World

SYMPATHY: Our sympathy is expressed to Peter Chin, who’s father passed away in early January. His father was 96 years old.

NEW CONTACTS:  Through World Video Bible School and Susanna Austin, I have had two individuals contact me in relation to the materials we have prepared to help Chinese people learn the gospel. One of the contacts is in the very northern part of Malaysia and the other one is in Beijing, China. We are thankful for the opportunities we have to help people around the world learn the truth of the gospel.
