35 Days in Singapore and Malaysia

The news for this trip began a week before I left on November 19th for Singapore-Malaysia. On the Monday before I left, I fractured a two parts of one bone in my right foot and was afraid I would not be able to make the trip. After visiting the doctor, he put me in an aircast and said I could make the trip.

On Tuesday morning, November 19th, my daughter, Libby took me to the airport to begin my 51st overseas mission trip. In addition to my usual luggage, I took along almost fifty pounds of books to donate to the Four Seas College library, as well as copies of the book, “Muscle and a Shovel” by Michael Shank. The Shank books were distributed to brethren in three different countries – Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia. In spite of the broken foot, the trip went well and I arrived in Singapore safely. I finally made it to bed about 3:30 AM.

Late Thursday morning, I went to eat at Subway, then bought oranges and water for the short time I would be in Singapore before heading for a weekend gospel meeting in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. On Thursday evening, I attended the English Bible Study at the Lim Ah Pin Rd. church. Thanks to the brethren for providing me transportation.

On Friday, after breakfast, I began to prepare for my trip to Johor Bahru. I was taken by one of the members of Johor Bahru (who lives in Singapore) over the Causeway to the house where I would stay for the two nights. The first service of the gospel meeting was on Friday night. There were not a lot of people in attendance, but I was thankful to be able to present my lesson.

On Saturday, I went along with other members from Johor Bahru back to Singapore to attend the Commencement Exercises of Four Seas College. Originally in my planning, I did not know if I would be able to attend this service, but thanks to the brethren in Malaysia, I was able to go. The service last a little over an hour with Billy Bland and Peter Chin speaking. There were nine brethren from five different countries who graduated this year. We were able to get back over to Malaysia in time for a quick meal before the Saturday evening service. The attendance was much better on this night.

Sunday morning would see a conclusion to the gospel meeting at Johor Bahru. I spoke at the Bible class and worship hour. After the services, we ate lunch together and visited with the brethren. In the afternoon, one of the families took me back to Singapore where I would be for the next five days.

On Monday and Tuesday, I had some free time, so took the opportunity to visit with some brethren in Singapore and also give my foot a chance to rest a bit.

The Four Seas College Lectureship began on Wednesday. It would continue through Sunday, but I left on Friday to go on to Melaka to conduct a bi-lingual Gospel Meeting for the church there. At the lectureship, there were a number of speakers on the program from the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia. It was good to visit with so many of the brethren in Southeast Asia. There were also Gospel Meetings conducted at night in both Jurong and Lim Ah Pin with different speakers each night. Thanks for all of the hospitality shown to me while I was in Singapore this first time. I would return to Singapore at the end of the trip for further efforts on the island.

Steven Loo came down from Melaka to attend the lectures and transported me in his car to Melaka to begin the weekend meeting – November 29 – December 1. The meeting began on Friday night. Even though we had planned a bi-lingual meeting, on Friday and Saturday night, there were no Chinese-only speaking people who attended, so the lessons were delivered in English.

On Sunday morning, we finally had some attend the services who needed the lessons in Chinese, so the Bible class and worship were in both English and Chinese. They also have a couple of members who speak Malaysian, so there are song books for that language, and during the worship, they go back in a separate room and they have translation from English into the Malaysian language.

After Sunday morning services, we had potluck, then William Leong and his two daughters transported me up to Kuala Lumpur for my next week in Malaysia. I enjoyed Sunday evening with Mike, June, and Hannah Leong.

For the next couple of days, I had some free time, so along with two other families; we headed up to my favorite place in Malaysia – Cameron Highlands. Unfortunately, I caught a cold up there, so I had to fight through that for the Section 17 Gospel Meeting.

The gospel meeting at Section 17 began on Friday, December 6th. The theme of the gospel meeting was “The God of the Bible.” We had a good start on Friday night with a good crowd attending. “Paul’s Sermon on Mars Hill” was the first lesson in the series. The weekend meeting continued on Saturday night with a study concerning the folly of idolatry. It was good to see Roger Campbell at the meeting on Saturday night. The meeting concluded Sunday morning with two lessons – “The Problem of Worldliness” and “The Hidden Gospel.”

I am thankful for the opportunity I had to be with the brethren at Section 17 and look forward to seeing them again in the future. They took very good care of me and also provided some funds to use for other efforts in Malaysia. On Sunday night, I attended a “wake” (what we might call in America as a “viewing”) for the father of Richard Lim, one of the deacons at the Klang Church of Christ. Ong Eng Boon preached the lesson. It was a very good sermon and hopefully made us all continue to remember there is a time when we will all leave this life.

On Monday and Tuesday, I had the opportunity to visit with several of the brethren from Section 17 church before heading off to Ipoh on Wednesday, December 11th. I arrived in Ipoh and was met by brother Victor Chu. We were talking about his father during our drive to lunch and to the hotel. His father had been on the brink of death for several weeks. After he dropped me off at the hotel, he came back to tell me his father had passed away.

This changed some of the plans for the evening. Brother Victor Chan and Ting Kong Eyo came back to pick me up for the evening services in Taiping. This was about an hour’s drive from Ipoh. We went up to have dinner with brother Megan and to visit with his family before the evening service. There were expected to be about fifteen to attend the evening service, but instead we had twenty-five people to attend. Originally, it was supposed to be an English class, but I ended up delivering the lesson in both English and Chinese.

I had Thursday morning off. I took the opportunity to catch up on my reports for this trip. On Thursday evening, I was taken to Kampar, where the church at Ipoh had started an effort, primarily among the college students at the local university. We had 23 attend the class on this night. I was thankful for the opportunity to have a part in this effort. I delivered a bi-lingual lesson on “God Demands Obedience” and “True Worship.”

Friday night was the first night of the gospel meeting in Ipoh. The theme of the meeting was: “Choices in Life.” The lesson on Friday night was “Proving the Deity of Christ.” There were a number who were unable to attend on Friday night because of the death of the father of Victor Chu.

On Saturday morning, I traveled to Victor Chu’s hometown to speak at the “wake” of his departed father. I was privileged to have a part in this effort to encourage Victor and his family. A number of the members from Ipoh made the two hour trip for this service. On Saturday night, we had the second night of the gospel meeting. The topic was “Can We Understand the Bible Alike?”

Sunday morning would bring this gospel meeting effort to a conclusion. All of these lessons were bi-lingual, so it took much more time to deliver the lessons in the two languages.
We had a pretty good attendance for the Sunday morning service in Ipoh. On Sunday evening, we had the worship service in Kampar.

I am thankful for the opportunity to travel to Taiping, Kampar, and Ipoh during this trip to Malaysia.

On Monday morning, I returned to Kuala Lumpur to spend the night before heading down to Kluang to speak two days. Thanks to Peter Bang for picking me up at the train station, for lunch, and for Kam Wah and Janet Leong for dinner.

On Tuesday morning, brother Peter Bang took me to the new bus station in Cheras to board the bus to Kluang. After a three and one half hour bus ride, I arrived safely in the city. I was met by brother Hock Heng. We met Tuesday night for a class from 7:30 – 9:30 for bi-lingual class. We then met again on Wednesday night at the same time for the second class. We had ten attend on Tuesday night and twelve attended on Wednesday night. We hope we were able to encourage the brethren in Kluang.

On Thursday morning, I boarded an 8:30 AM bus for Singapore to finish this current mission trip. After going through the checkpoints for Malaysia and Singapore, the bus dropped us off and I took a taxi to the hotel where I stay while on the island. On Thursday night, Justin Kwan met me and rode the taxi with me to the Lim Ah Pin church building. I spoke at the English Bible class that night.

The Chinese Gospel Meeting at Lim Ah Pin began on Friday night. There were a number of brethren who are away on various trips, so the attendance for the Friday and Saturday night services was not very good. The attendance on Sunday was much better.

On Sunday morning, I spoke at both of the English services. It was good to see many old friends at Lim Ah Pin.

On Monday morning, I boarded by flight for Japan, then two hours after arriving there, boarded the flight for Atlanta. It was the earliest I had every arrived in the ATL. James Guyton met me and drove me home. Thanks for all your prayers on my behalf during this five week trip.

Taiwan Trip

On October 3rd, I headed back to Taiwan for the second phase of my work there this year. The last trip took me to Taichung to translate in a gospel meeting and also to Hualien for a week long effort with the brethren there. This trip involved a weekend with the brethren in Taipei, a lectureship in Taichung, and two full days with our brethren in Tainan.

This was my 50th mission trip since 1985. My first trip was made while living in Taiwan. On that first trip, I traveled to Thailand, Pakistan, Singapore, and Malaysia. I am so thankful I have been able to do what I can in helping to spread the gospel around the world to strengthen and encourage the local brethren in all of these places.

I am thankful to report another uneventful flight to Taiwan. After I arrived, brother and sister Jao met me and drove me to the hotel where I stay while in Taipei – The Taipei Teacher’s Hostel.

On Saturday morning, I went to purchase a new computer to use in my work. My old one had become “not very reliable.” I know it will take me a little time to get used to the new one, especially since it has Windows 8, but it should serve me well for many years to come.

In the afternoon, I went to the apartment of Jason and Nathalie Brzozowski. They have a five month old son named Lucas. They live in NanKang, which is near the international airport. The other members of the Taipei congregation also came for the afternoon class. After the class, we went to a nearby mall for dinner before closing out the day.

On Sunday morning, I spoke to the congregation on the subject, “Living the Christian Life.” We had planned to do some sight-seeing in the afternoon, but because of the wind and rain of a nearby typhoon, we decided to call it a day.

On Monday morning, I headed to Taichung. I took the High Speed Train from Taipei to Taichung. It is about a one hundred mile trip made in less than an hour. This beats taking the bus which could take as much as three hours.

After eating lunch, I taught a class via Skype to the father of some of the members in Batu Pahat, Malaysia. After the class, brother Yo took me to Costco to buy some things I needed for the week.

Since the lectureship did not begin until Thursday, I had time to spend with the Yo family and to take one day to go and visit the town of Lugang (Deer Harbor), which is located in Changhua county. I visited some places my family had seen thirty years ago. When you are visiting a place that has over a three hundred year history, thirty years does not affect it that much.

The lectureship began on Thursday night. I was the speaker for the first session of the lectureship. My topic was, “Are We Tough Enough?” My lesson dealt with overcoming problems in our lives. There were about thirty people who attended from Taichung, Taipei, Hualien, and Kaohsiung.

On Friday, I spent time working on preparing materials for future events. Also, the second night of the lectureship was at 7:30 PM. Brother Wang, from Hualien, was the speaker. He delivered an excellent lesson on the subject of boldly serving God. There were a few more in attendance for the services on Friday night.

Saturday was a full day of lectures in Taichung. Brother Jao and brother Wang were the speakers for the day. They both delivered excellent lessons that were very encouraging. Again, there was a very good number in attendance. The fellowship was also excellent.

Sunday was the last day of the lectureship. I spoke at both the Bible class and the worship session. In the Bible class, my topic was “Defending the Faith.” In the worship hour, my topic was “Magnifying Christ in My Life.” We had 38 to attend the morning services.

After the morning services, I had the opportunity to have lunch with Libby’s aunt. It was good to visit with her again. Then, in the afternoon, several of the brethren went to a nearby town which is known for its wood carvings. It was good to spend some time with John and Michele Yo. Their son, Ben, will be going to Singapore next summer to begin art school. He is a very talented artist.

On Monday, I headed south to Tainan for two days of teaching and visiting in and around the section of Tainan, called Yu Jing. We arrived in Yu Jing about noon, had lunch and then had classes from 2:00 – 3:15 PM. After the class, we made visits in the area until dinner time. After dinner, we had another class from 6:45 – 8:10 PM. We then made the one hour drive back to brother Wang’s parent’s house to spend the night. I went to bed about 10 PM, exhausted.

Tuesday morning, after breakfast, we were out the door at 7:30 AM to begin a morning of visits in two different sections of the city. Both of the visits were of non-members. One of them was the father of Yolanda Wu. He is three days older than my mother. He lives in a Veterans’ Retirement Home. We arrived in Yu Jing about noon for lunch. We then had another teaching session from 2:00 – 3:15 PM. Just like Monday, we followed the class with visits in the area. After dinner, we had our final session from 6:45 – 8:10 PM. We made one more visit before heading back to brother Wang’s parent’s house.

On Wednesday morning, we headed for the JiaYi City High Speed Rail Station to board the train for Taipei. We arrived in Taipei at 10:00 AM after a one hour and twenty-three minute ride.

I had the opportunity to take care of some last minute activities in Taipei before getting ready for bed because I was planning to get up at 4:00 AM to get ready to head to the airport.

I did get up on time and made it to the airport and had a very smooth and fast trip home. This is the first time I have ever arrived back in Atlanta before 3 PM. We actually arrive at 2 PM. I guess the 138 mph tail wind helped! I was also able to get about six total hours of sleep on the two flights.

Thanks to James Guyton for being there to meet me at the International Terminal and to get me home by 4 PM. We made our traditional stop at Chick-fil-a in Suwanee for my large cup of iced tea.

After getting all my luggage put away and getting all of my dirty clothes washed and put up, I got a good night’s sleep on Thursday night. Friday was a busy day, starting to get caught up on other projects.

Thanks for all of your prayers and support that made this trip possible. It was a busy two weeks. We were also, with the help of various brethren, able to purchase a number of Bibles to use in the various works on the island.

I will depart for Singapore-Malaysia on November 19th. I will be there until December 23rd. Please keep this upcoming effort in your prayers as well.

2013 Southeast Georgia Lectures in Richmond Hill, GA

It was my privilege to speak on the lectureship in Richmond Hill on October 27th. Riley Nelson is the good preacher there. My topic was: “Let Us Love One Another” (1 John 4:1-11. It was good to see many faithful brethren attending this weekend event. It was also good to see old friends and make new friends. I am thankful for the hospitality shown to me while I was there.

August Taiwan Trip

It was a privilege to begin my 49th overseas mission trip and to go to the place where I lived for ten years working among the Chinese people.

The trip to Taiwan was mostly uneventful. Two things happened to make it a little different. The Chinese Taipei Team who won the 13-15 year old World Series was on the plane from Tokyo to Taipei. It was announced and everyone applauded. When we got to the airport in Taiwan, there was a huge crowd waiting to greet them. The other event was the news of a typhoon on its way to Taiwan. It did not affect my flight, but it did affect the flight of Stan Crowley coming from Canton, China. He was delayed for a day because of the cancellation of his flight. Also, many of the shops in Taipei were closed because of the typhoon warning. However, the rain and wind was not very strong, at least where I was staying in Taipei. While I was heating my water for tea in the kettle, I reached across to turn off the light and forgot the heat of the steam of the water. I got a nice burn on my left arm. I was able to treat it with medicine and keep it covered until it healed.

So, Stan arrived on Thursday instead of Wednesday. The one thing we were able to do as far as sightseeing goes was to visit the Taipei 101 tower. This used to be the tallest building in the world. Even though I had been to the tower before, I had never had the opportunity to go up to the observation floor (91st floor). It was an amazing view.

On Friday morning, we headed for Taichung. We took the High Speed train from Taipei to Taichung. The trip took less than one hour, traveling at speeds up to 185 mph. After getting settled in and going to lunch we were able to go and make a visit of one of the members before the evening services. This is the first time I had translated for someone else in quite a while. The lesson seemed to go well.

On Saturday, we spent the day with brother and sister Jao from Taipei. They came down to Taichung to support the gospel meeting. We went to a cultural center which showed life in China in years past. We also went to eat my favorite noodle soup in the world at the “66 Happiness” Noodle Shop in Taichung. In the evening was the second night of the gospel meeting. We had a total of 28 people to attend the second night of the meeting. This is a very good number to attend. The lesson was received well.

We had a great final day at the gospel meeting in Taichung. There were about the same number of people in attendance for the three sessions on Sunday. It was a privilege to be able to translate three more of Stan’s lessons presented to the friends and brethren who attended. After the afternoon service ended, we headed to Miaoli to visit a new Christian who is in a Rehab center about one hour away from Taichung.

Monday was a travel day. I went with Stan Crowley on the High Speed Rail Train to Taoyuan station and put him on the bus to the International Airport. He went on to his next visit in Siem Reap, Cambodia. After I saw him off to the airport, I caught a bus to the Taoyuan train station. I was told the bus would stop right by the train station, but instead it stopped about three blocks away. It is lots of fun to pull a large suitcase and computer bad behind you for three blocks through traffic and people. I am thankful for the service desk at a department store for watching my suitcase so I could go eat lunch before boarding the five hour train to go to Hualien.

After arriving in Hualien, brother and sister Wang took me to my favorite wonton soup restaurant for dinner. The place was packed. As we were leaving, they were out of wonton’s. Anyone else who came in at this time would have been out of luck. I then went to the grocery store to buy my water and oranges for the week. Then I went to the building to settle in to my room for the week.

On Tuesday, after breakfast, brother Wang picked me up and we made a morning visit to the mother of two of the members of the church here in Hualien. After lunch we made several more visits of prospects who live in the area right up to dinner time.

Wednesday morning started out early. Brother Wang picked me up to go with him to the Assisted Living home. We arrived at the home and began to make visits all over the facility. We visited with members and non-members alike. I saw many people that I have seen there for the past several years. We also had the chance to talk to some of the staff members as well about the Bible. It was a very profitable morning.

After lunch I had planned to take my computer to McDonalds so that I could access the internet, but the McDonalds here does not have free wifi and the girl could not tell me how I could purchase the ability to use it, so I had to give up that idea. It was too far to go to Starbucks to try to use their wifi. Fortunately, I have access to the internet through my phone, so I was not totally cut off from access.

The gospel meeting began Wednesday night. The theme of the meeting is “Overcoming.” The lesson tonight was “Overcoming Temptation.” We had a few visitors to attend the first night of the meeting. There were about 30 who attended the first night of the meeting.

Thursday began with rain – rain coming from a second typhoon heading for the island on this trip. Now you know why I normally do not go to Taiwan during the summer – heat and typhoons! The morning started out with a Bible class at the assisted living home. I talked about the value of studying the Old Testament and those people of faith mentioned there.

After the Bible class, one of the long-time prospects decided to be baptized. We had to go get the inflatable pool and borrow an air compressor to air it up. The air compressor was locked up and it took about 45 minutes before we could find someone to get it for us. After the baptism, we had lunch, visited with a friend of the Wangs, then headed for the afternoon Bible study at the other assisted living home. I talked about Hebrews chapter three in the afternoon class. After that class ended, brother Wang took me to a hardware store so I could buy a compressor for the church’s use in the future. This way, they will not have to borrow one.

In the evening, we had the second night of our gospel meeting. The topic was “Overcoming Discouragement.” We had some other visitors to attend the services on the second night.

Friday dawned bright and sunny. It was a busy day from the beginning. We were able to visit with some of the eight bedfast members at the Assisted Living home and then we had the opportunity to develop the interest of some of the workers at the home. We were there most of the morning. After lunch, we made two more visits of non-members. At the second visit, I met a young lady from Indonesia who was working for the elderly couple. She could speak a little bit of Mandarin, so we were able to talk about little bit. I found out she is from Lampung in Sumatra, Indonesia. I have put her in touch with our brethren there and hopefully through Facebook and email, they will be able to teach her.

Friday evening was the third and final installment in “Overcoming…” lessons. The title was “Overcoming Fear.” It was a long, but very useful and profitable day in the Kingdom.

Saturday was a day of free time. I took advantage of an extra hour of sleep and then had the opportunity to walk through part of the town and to buy a couple of things. Saturday evening was the last night of the meeting. The topic was “Living the Christian Life.”

Sunday morning would be a busy day. We left the church building at 6 AM for the morning worship service at the assisted living home. The  topic for the day was “Cornelius and Saul.” After that, we had Bible study and worship at the church building. The topic for Bible study was “Great Missions.” For worship, the topic was “Choices People Make.” In the afternoon, we went over to the other assisted living home and used the same lesson for the brethren there. All of these activities ended about 4 PM.

I went to dinner with brother and sister Wu and had a chance to visit with them and encourage them in the work. After dinner, I worked on getting my luggage ready to head back to Taipei on Monday morning. I took the train back to Taipei to spend the last day there before heading home on Tuesday morning.
