Singapore – Batam – Taiwan

On November 20th, I left for my 66th overseas mission trip. I overnighted in Taiwan before heading on to attend the Four Seas College Lectureship to encourage those who attended, to visit with friends, and speak at three Chinese services at the Lim Ah Pin church.

After attending the lectureship and speaking at the Chinese services at Lim Ah Pin, I traveled to the island of Batam, Indonesia to teach two nights to the brethren there. Timbul Siriat, one of the instructors at the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy, traveled from Lampung Province to translate for me. While I there, I spoke on Leadership in the Church and Leadership in the Home. On the second day, we had a baptism of one of the teenagers of the congregations in Batam. After those two days, I overnighted in Singapore then headed to Taiwan for the rest of the trip. I arrived safely and Taiwan and made my way down to Taichung via train and taxi. Brother Kwan also was in Taiwan for teaching in Taipei and at the lectureship in Taichung.

The lectureship began Friday night, December 1st. Brother Wang was the first speaker. The theme of the lectureship was the book of Nehemiah. There were more than thirty in attendance for the first session of the lectures. There were five visitors included in that number. As usual, brother Wang did a great job in presenting a lesson on the first two chapters of Nehemiah.

On Saturday morning, brother Jao from Taipei spoke, followed by brother Wang. In the afternoon, I spoke on Nehemiah chapter six and brother Kwan spoke on chapters 7-12. After this lesson, we had the opportunity to baptize a lady into Christ. Brother Kwan met with her for about an hour to make sure she was ready to become a Christian. We then had a lesson on Saturday night by Jadyn Chen. He is the preacher for Batu Pahat in Malaysia. Sunday morning brought the lectureship to an end. I spoke on Nehemiah chapter thirteen and brother Kwan spoke concerning the prayers made by Nehemiah throughout the book.

On Monday and Tuesday, we made a number of visits with members and prospects. We had some very good visits on these two days. The same is true for Wednesday. On Thursday, I traveled by train to Hualien, where I would be for the next week.

On Friday, we made one visit after another with members and visitors to teach and encourage. On Saturday morning, we continued the visiting.

Sunday is always a busy day in Hualien. The day begins at 5:50 AM as we head for the Assisted Living home for the first of four services on the day. I speak in Mandarin at the homes and brother Wang translates into Taiwanese. There were about 45 in attendance for the service, including a 104 year old brother. After this service, we had Bible study and worship services at the church building. I spoke at both the Bible class and worship periods. At 2:30 in the afternoon, we conducted the worship service at the second Assisted Living home. For the three services, about seventy people here in Hualien worshipped with us on Sunday.

On Monday, we had a Bible study in the morning with a few of the people at the assisted living home. In the afternoon, we studied with brother Wang’s nephew. In the evening we had dinner with one of our members who was visiting from southern Taiwan and one of her friends. On Tuesday morning, we had a lengthy Bible study with two members who are having difficulty with understanding some difficult passages. In the late afternoon, we visited one of the older members to encourage her.

Wednesday started and ended with a Bible study. In between, we drove down the east coast of Taiwan toward Taitung. On the trip, we crossed over the Tropic of Cancer. I have done this several times in my life, but I have never seen a marker before. My last day in Hualien, I taught classes at both of the assisted living homes and was taken to another beautiful place outside of Hualien I had never seen before.

On Friday, I took the train to Taipei. I arrived about noon and did some quick shopping before checking in to my room. I took the rest of the day to rest up a bit. On Saturday, I attended the funeral of brother William Chen’s father. In the evening, I preached Saturday night for about 90 minutes. On Sunday, I preached at the worship service and at the Bible study. We had about fifteen to attend. In the afternoon, I went to view a British Library exhibit of Egyptian mummies at the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

On Monday, I began my trip home. Even though there were some slight delays, I still arrived home ahead and schedule. Thanks for all the prayers offered on my behalf and all the hospitality shown to me by my brethren overseas.

My next scheduled overseas trip is to Indonesia in February 2018.

October Activities

After returning from the China and Singapore trip on October 10th, I was home for three days before traveling over to Memphis to attend the 2nd Annual Mission Seminar at the Forest Hill Church of Christ. There were many encouraging lessons delivered and it was good to be with brethren who are interested in carrying the gospel to the whole world.

After returning home from Memphis, I had the privilege to attend the New Hope Rd. church in Dacula, GA on Monday and Tuesday night and hear Don Blackwell preach the gospel. It was also good to see Jeff Johnson, Bob and Ginny Knox, Lynn Bradshaw, Jack and Debbie Gaylord, Jenny Davis and two of her boys.

On the last weekend in October, I had the privilege to speak on the Southeast Georgia Lectureship in Richmond Hill, GA. I went a couple of days before the lectureship to sightsee with Mike and Lydia Tubbs. They traveled up from Palatka, Florida. We went to Savannah, Georgia and Hilton Head, South Carolina. The lectureship covered the Book of Hebrews. There were some excellent lessons delivered by ten different speakers. This lectureship is conducted every year on the last weekend in October.

China – Singapore Trip
Sept. 6 – Oct. 10

On September 6th, I began my 65th overseas mission trip. The route for this trip to China was a little different this year. I first went to Detroit before taking a non-stop flight to Shanghai. I wish I could say it was uneventful, but once again, I left my small bag on the plane and had to hustle around to get it back in time to make my flight to Shanghai. I was able to sleep quite a bit on the flight to Shanghai and was met by Bob when I arrived. I got settled in and was able to get about six hours sleep the first night in town. On Friday morning, I looked for my socks – no socks! I forgot to pack them! There is a first time for everything. In the afternoon I went to buy some socks.

On Friday morning, I went to a Bible class with about ten in attendance. A brother from Singapore taught the class. Another class with another group of Christians met on Friday night. A third class was conducted on Saturday afternoon. When we go to the different places for these Bible classes it usually takes a subway or bus ride and quite a bit of walking.

On Sunday morning, I visited a different congregation. Bob, his family, and I went there for worship. They do not have a regular preacher, so the different preachers I am working with take turns helping them. I spoke on the 12th and 13th chapters of 2 Corinthians. There were about twenty in attendance. During the times we were not teaching or traveling, I spent time working on manuscripts and lessons for future appointments.

On Monday, I moved over to the other side of Shanghai to begin teaching a class on “God’s Pattern.” On Monday afternoon, I taught for four hours. On Tuesday, I taught in the morning and afternoon. On Wednesday, I taught again in the morning. In the afternoon, I went back to the other side of Shanghai where I had a class on Wednesday night. I only had one student for class this year. He traveled up to Shanghai each Monday from a city near Wuhan.

On Thursday morning, Bob and I had another appointment to teach a friend of some of the brethren in Singapore. We had a very good discussion with him for almost two hours. On Friday, I taught the regular Friday morning Bible class at one the congregations in west Shanghai. On Friday evening, I taught the regular class conducted in an office of one of the brethren in Shanghai.

On Saturday, September 16th, the east Shanghai congregation conducted a youth program. I had the privilege to speak twice on this day. We had about 30 to attend this event. We concluded a little early because it was thought a government man came to “spy” on the meeting.

On Sunday, I spoke at two different churches in Shanghai. We had more than thirty to attend the first service today and about twenty for the other congregation. These are places I have spoken for in the past.

On Monday, I went back to the east side to teach three days – morning and afternoon. We finally got some rain on Wednesday. I gave a test on Thursday then headed back to the west side for classes on Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday, I went to Nanjing for the first time. Bob, Rebecca, and Joshua took me down there. It was a little disappointing because there was only one person who attended the service. Also, it rained and rained and rained. We stayed over for two days so that I could do some sightseeing in this historic Chinese city. We were not able to go to the main historic sites on Monday because they were all closed. I was able to visit a former temple ground that has been turned into a tourist attraction.

On Tuesday, before heading back to Shanghai, I was able to visit the Nanjing 1937 Massacre Museum and also a World War II exhibit. We headed back to Shanghai on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday we were supposed to have another regular Bible study with a few students, but because of an upcoming holiday, they were not able to attend the class. On Thursday, I worked on a number of projects for next month.

There were two more Bible studies on Friday. On Friday morning, we had about twelve to attend that class. During the afternoon, I made my annual trip to the historic Bund next to the Whangpu River in Shanghai. On Friday evening, I spent another session in helping the brethren know how to teach their friends and neighbors how to become a New Testament Christian.

Sunday was the beginning of my last week in China. I spoke at two services on Sunday. On Monday morning, about thirty Christians from Shanghai took a bus to another province to conduct a two day lectureship/camp. I spoke on Monday afternoon. We had a good study on the subject of the book of Ephesians with about 35 in attendance. We had a total of five speakers at the camp. On Wednesday, we returned to Shanghai. On Thursday, I visited with one of the local families and got my luggage ready for the trip to Singapore. I also was able to get my hair cut. With the discount provided by the local brother, I was able to get a wash and cut for US$1.50!

On Friday morning, I took a car out to the Shanghai International Airport for my flight to Singapore. As I was upgraded to business class from Atlanta to Detroit, I was also upgraded from Shanghai to Tokyo. As I was going to the gate to board the plane to Singapore, I saw James Andrews waiting on the same plane. He was on his way to Indonesia to work with the brethren there. After safe arrival in Singapore, I went to the hotel.

On Saturday morning, I traveled to the Jurong church building in Singapore for the wedding of Goh Ser Ern and Ong Jun Wei. I was privileged to be able to attend the wedding along with about 200 other friends, relatives, and Christians. It was a very nice wedding and lunch.

On Sunday, I had the privilege to preach in English and Chinese at the Lim Ah Pin congregation. For the English worship service, I preached on the “Pillars of Successful Marriage.” For the Bible class, I talked about “God’s Promise to Abraham.” After the morning services, I had lunch with the Chua family. In the afternoon, I spoke at the two Chinese services. My topic for the afternoon sessions was “We Must Speak The Truth in Love.”

Monday was my last day in Singapore. I was able to get a good walk in, do some last minute shopping and have dinner with one of my friends.

On Tuesday morning (Singapore time), I got up at 1:30 am to begin the journey home. I arrived at the airport at 3:40 am and checked in for my flight to Narita (Tokyo). The flight went well and I was able to catch up on some of the sleep I missed during the night. After about a two hour layover in Tokyo, I boarded the plane to Atlanta. Again, it was a good flight and I was able to sleep about half of the time. We arrived early in Atlanta, I was able to get through customs pretty quickly and was on my way home. I arrived safely.

Thanks for all of the prayers offered on my behalf during this trip. The trip to China was very useful and I also had the opportunity to encourage the brethren in Singapore as well. I will quickly add, I received a great deal of encouragement from the brethren over there as well.

I am scheduled to go to Memphis to attend the 2nd Annual Mission Forum at Forest Hill which will be conducted October 13-14. There will be more mutual encouragement from brethren interested in mission work.
