WHERE IS OUR EMPHASIS?
John M. Grubb

The population of the world has now passed the seven billion mark. The majority of the people who populate this earth have never had the opportunity to hear the gospel of Christ. What are we doing about it? Jesus came to this earth “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Before going back to heaven, Jesus left instruction to preach the gospel to the whole world (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16).  The Christians in the first century took this responsibility seriously, and got the job done! (Acts 8:4; Colossians 1:23).

The church has the responsibility to work in three areas: evangelism, benevolence, and edification. The Bible clearly tells us to discharge our responsibility in all three areas. It seems that more emphasis is being placed upon “so-called” edification of the body instead of evangelism in many places in our brotherhood. Also, some congregations are always ready to fulfill their responsibility in the area of benevolence, but when opportunities are made available for preaching the gospel to a lost world, the reply, “our budget is set,” is given!

We need to be reminded that the most important thing in the world is to obtain eternal life.  Paul said, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable” (1 Corinthians 15:19). He also wrote, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2). The inspired apostles knew that helping the needy was important but said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables…. we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word” (Acts 6:2,4). This does not mean that benevolence and edification are not important, but that preaching the gospel to the lost is more important.

It seems that if brethren want to raise millions of dollars to build church buildings or gymnasiums, it is no problem. However, challenge the Lord’s church to raise a large amount of money to carry the gospel to the lost in a faraway place and it is a big problem! Our emphasis is in the wrong place. This is not a new problem. It has been a problem for a long time.

Brethren, there are faithful men who want to go to the mission field to preach the gospel of Christ but cannot go, because our emphasis is in the wrong place. There may be brethren already in the field who cannot properly do the job that needs to be done because of the lack of funds. It may be that they will have to leave the field for that reason.

We are not suggesting that congregations stop doing good work that they are already doing, but to make sure that their emphasis is in the right place. “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
