June Events

I returned from my Singapore-Malaysia trip on June 8th. It took me more than a week to get back to my normal sleep patterns. This is usual with me. Getting back to normal at home takes much longer than getting into the swing of things when I am overseas.

I had much to catch-up on that had piled up while I was away. I spent the first week home taking care of those things. In the midst of all of this was my birthday and Father’s Day. On Sunday night, June 17th, I gave my PowerPoint report of my recent mission trip. Seth Michael, the preacher at Chestnut Mountain, videotaped the presentation and coordinates the slides with my speaking. It is now available on the internet at this site:

You will have to copy this and paste it into your browser.

I had a doctor’s appointment and dentist appointments after I returned from the trip as well. These are part of my regular routine.

THE BIBLE AND THE CHINESE CULTURE

While working in Asia, we discovered that most Chinese people think the Bible is a “western” book. Since most denominational missionaries came from the west, there is the misconception that Christianity is a western religion.

God wants all people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4). He does not want anybody to be lost (2 Peter 3:9). This is the reason Christ came to the earth (John 3:16; Romans 5:6-8). This includes Chinese people.

They are surprised to learn that the church that Jesus established began in the east, not the west.  Jesus was from the east, not the west. He was a Jew, from the nation of Israel. Israel is part of the east, not the west. You do not read about anyone from the “west” in the Bible until the Roman empire is mentioned at the opening of the New Testament.

Although the word Chinese is not in the Bible, the Bible does include Chinese people. People are constantly wondering about the origin of languages. The Bible has the answer. The most ancient of languages began at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). This includes the Chinese language.  It is very interesting to learn the Chinese character for “boat” is made of three “parts.” Those three “parts” are: “vessel,” the number “8,” and one of the words for “people.” When you think about a vessel with eight people, what comes to mind? The ark! Isn’t it interesting the word for “boat” in Chinese has a very interesting connection to a Bible story. Is this a coincidence? I do not believe so. God put that knowledge in their language at the tower of Babel.

Romans 1:18-25 talks about those who left God and worshipped idols. This also discusses the degree of the departure. The Chinese culture fits into this passage. As a people, they have gone a long distance from God. In order for them to come back, they have a long trip to make. It will take more time for them to make that trip then it would for those much closer.

It would take much more time to travel from China to Chicago than from Memphis to Chicago.  It is easier to cross a plain than to cross a mountain. What we have said about Chinese people is also true of many Asians. It is hard to reach them with the gospel. Even though it is a difficult field, the great commission still includes these people.

When we preach the gospel, regardless of the culture, we must preach the pure gospel of Christ. The gospel is the only way people can be saved (Romans 1:16; James 1:21; 1 Peter 1:22-25; Hebrews 4:12).

Mission Trip to Asia (May 10-June 11)

On May 10th, I left on my 68th short-term mission trip to Singapore and Malaysia. I conducted two gospel meetings in Malaysia and was one of the speakers at the Annual Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I also attended the Lim Ah Pin camp in early June.

Thanks for your prayers as I traveled and for all of the opportunities I had to encourage our brethren in southeast Asia.

Before leaving for Asia, I had the privilege to take part in the Georgia School of Preaching Lectureship conducted at the Piedmont Road church building in Marietta, GA. The elders of the Piedmont Rd. congregation oversee this work. David Decker is the Director of the School. I spoke during the worship on Sunday morning then conducted a 90 minute workshop on personal evangelism. It was good to see a lot of old friends and also to make new friends from around the state of Georgia.

Safe Trip to Singapore

Thanks to my daughter, Libby, for taking me to the airport. I had a safe and uneventful flight to Tokyo. After about a two hour layover, I had another good flight to Singapore, arriving there right before midnight.

On Saturday, I took it easy to get over my jet lag. I also worked on some of my upcoming projects. On Sunday, I attended the morning worship service at the Lim Ah Pin congregation. I had the opportunity to hear Ernest Lau to preach. He is a recent graduate of Four Seas College, also recently married, and is the son of one of the elders of the congregation, Jimmy Lau. He announced that his wife and he would be going to Palau for three months to work with the church there while the Joey Treat family visited stateside. That was very encouraging news to me. I was invited to speak at the Chinese worship service in the afternoon. It was good to see so many of the brethren there.

On Monday morning, I had the privilege to speak at chapel services at Four Seas College. I also had the opportunity to visit with Eddy Ee and Yong Yao, preachers for the Jurong congregation. Brother Ee is also one of the elders of the congregation. He has been teaching in the school for many decades. In the evening, I had an opportunity to visit with Jasmine Lim, a long-time friend, originally from Malaysia.

I was able to take a half a day on Tuesday to go see part of the new Singapore I had never seen. I enjoyed getting to see all of the new additions around Marina Bay. I also walked all the way around the bay. On Wednesday night, I had the opportunity to have dinner with two of our Christian sisters from Lim Ah Pin. Thanks to Rachel Ruixian and Eunice Chua for inviting me for dinner.

For lunch on Thursday, I had the chance to eat with Lucas Quek, one of the members at Jurong. It was great to catch up with him and hear about his family. I am looking forward to seeing them again in November. On Thursday night, I attended the midweek service at Lim Ah Pin. On Friday, May 18th, I flew from Singapore up to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to begin a gospel meeting at Kota Kemuning. I arrived safely and got settled in to the room in the church building where I would stay for the next week.

On Saturday, I was treated to three meals during the day by the Kota Kemuning brethren. It was great to get to know some more of the members of the congregation. I was treated to meals by some of the younger members and was encouraged by their desire to live for the Lord.

We had a good day on Sunday. I had breakfast with Sandra Leong and Andy Ling. Willy was sick and was not able to make it. I spoke at the Bible class and the worship. As usual, I was not able to cover all the material. As I said recently in a gospel meeting in Illinois, “The longer I preach, the longer I preach.” I will finish the rest of the lesson next year. After the morning service, there was a potluck at the church building. After the meal, we went to visit one of the members. In the evening, I had another meal with one of the families here at Kota Kemuning.

On Monday, I had meals with three different groups of brethren. On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to spend the day with Ong Eng Boon. On Tuesday night, I taught a Bible class to about twenty members at one of the member’s house. On Wednesday, I spent time with Ong Eng Boon and Peter Bang. Peter and I also made a visit to one of the Section 17 congregation’s members. On Thursday, I went with members of the church in the area to visit a family to encourage them. I then moved over to the Subang Jaya area to begin an effort there over the weekend. I began a three part series on “We Must Speak the Truth in Love.” I spoke on Friday night and twice on Sunday morning. On Saturday, I attended a morning seminar at the Klang congregation. There was a very good crowd who listened to topics concerning the Way of Salvation. On Sunday afternoon, I also spoke to the Chinese congregation at Subang Jaya.

On Sunday evening, I shared a meal with some of the brethren from the Section 17 congregation. We had about twenty to come to enjoy a meal together. On Monday, I loved to the place where the Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship was conducted. In the evening, I had the opportunity to spend time with good friends. On Tuesday, another family spent the middle of the day with me. The same was true for Wednesday, leading up to the Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship conducted in Kuala Lumpur.

On Thursday, May 30th, the 13th Annual Chinese Asian Bible Lectureship began. About 100 people came from Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and the United States. There were thirteen speakers to speak on a variety of topic connected with “one another.” Our thanks is extended to Eng Boon and Jedediah Yuan for organizing the event. We are also grateful for all of the brethren in Malaysia who helped with all of the logistics of making things run smoothly. It was great to see so many brethren from Asia who came together to sing praises to God and study God’s Word. The program continued through Saturday at noon. On Saturday afternoon, I traveled back to Singapore via airplane and worshipped with the Lim Ah Pin congregation Sunday morning.

On Monday, I participated in the June camp of the Lim Ah Pin congregation, conducted in the southernmost state in Malaysia. There were 90 people who went to the camp. The camp lasted until Thursday noon. It was one of the most enjoyable camps I have ever attended. There were a number of lessons delivered with interaction from the group. We broke up into groups to talk about various aspects of the lessons. We had games where we had to cooperate together. We sang hymns each night as well. We had campers from just a few months old to over ninety years old. Thanks to the elders, who attended the camp, and to the organizers that made the camp a success.

On Thursday afternoon, we went back to Singapore and then had their regular Thursday night Bible study. This will be the last time I will be at Lim Ah Pin until the end of the year when I go back to speak at the Four Seas College lectures and attend the evening gospel meetings conducted at Lim Ah Pin and Jurong.

On Friday, I caught up on my reports and my PowerPoint presentation. I give a report of every mission trip I make at the Chestnut Mountain congregation upon my return home. On Friday night, I had dinner with my good friends, Ong Jun Wei and Sz En. These two young people have been married now for almost nine months. They have been good friends to me for many, many years.

On Sunday, I spent my last day in Asia at the Jurong congregation. I spoke in a Bible class then preached at the worship service. It was good to see the brethren there. I had lunch afterwards with Andrew and Sharon Chan and Eddy and Theresa Ee.

On Monday morning, I boarded my flight back to the states. Thanks for all of your prayers during this trip.
