Stateside Reporting

It is always good to get back to the states for a few weeks before heading overseas again. During that time, I catch up on work that sits while I am gone. I also have the opportunity to visit congregations to give a report of my work and also to attend various lectureships and gospel meetings. I have two reporting appointments scheduled for this month before heading back overseas next month to encourage and help the work among our brethren in Indonesia. In late December, I had the privilege to speak twice at the Chestnut Mountain congregation. This congregation oversees my work among the Chinese people around the world. I will give my mission report on January 7th. It was also good to have Sam back home for the last few days of the year.

Thanks to brethren such as: Barry and Melany Hatcher, Don and Judy Waggoner, and a number of other faithful brethren, we now have a number of faithful congregations spread throughout the country. We also have an excellent school located in Lampung, Sumatra. I will have the privilege to visit seven different areas and work with congregations and the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy.

Indonesia is the most populous Islamic country in the world – more than 261 million people living there. However, because of its secular government, we are able to preach and teach the gospel to anyone who will listen. There are a number of ethnic groups in Indonesia, including Chinese. Because of a decades long ban on the Chinese language, very few people are able to speak Mandarin. There are now Chinese schools operating in various cities now.

We are thankful for all of the faithful Indonesian brethren who are working throughout the country to help carry the gospel to the Indonesian people.

I am thankful that I can play a small part in helping to encourage and strengthen the brethren in that part of the world. Please continue to pray for all of the efforts being made, not only in Indonesia, but around the world.

FROM THE ARCHIVES – TAIWAN NEWSLETTER JANUARY 1989

TEMPLES: A MONEY–MAKING OPERATION

One of the first things that tourists notice about Taiwan and the Far East in general is the over-abundance of temples. People are amazed that in spite of the poor economies, temples seem to thrive. (Note: Not all Asian economies are poor now.)

Just recently, we were made to realize one of the reasons there are so many temples around is because they are money-making operations.  They are built by the donations of worshippers, and they are operated by the contributions made by those who are wishing to avoid bad luck and secure good luck. This was pointed out recently in a CHINA POST article.

We cannot compare the number of congregations with the number of temples, because we are not in the money-making business. We are trying, to the best of our ability, to preach the gospel in its purity and simplicity. We also make no charge to those who receive it.  Because we are not in the money-making business, we must continue to depend upon our brethren to supply our needs.  (See 3 John 5-8.)

There are so many people who need to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is up to all of us to see that they get that opportunity. Please remember that about 60% of the world’s population is right here in Asia. Even though the cost of taking the gospel gets more expensive every year (especially in Asia), we must still fulfill the great commission to take the gospel to the whole world (Mark 16:15-16; Matthew 28:19-20).

We are grateful for all those who continue to show interest in helping us to carry the gospel to the Chinese people.
