July Events

I do not normally have the opportunity to speak at Chestnut Mountain except to give reports of my mission trips (on Sunday nights) or to speak when Ron Cope is sick or out of town. On July 3rd, Ron was unable to preach, so I was afforded the opportunity to preach that Sunday morning. I appreciated this chance to speak to the brethren at Chestnut Mountain. On July 10th, we were able to worship in our remodeled auditorium. It is not completed finished, but we were still able to meet there.

On the third weekend in July, I went back to Indiana for a weekend Gospel Meeting at the Morgan St. church in Martinsville, Indiana. While I was there, I was able to visit with my mother again. The Sunday evening service was conducted at 1 PM, so I was able to travel up to Shelbyville Road to worship with the brethren there. I was able to see Howard and Margaret Goodman for the first time in many years.

On the 20th of July, I booked my tickets for my New Zealand trip that is scheduled for January 31 – March 14, 2017. James Cammock is organizing the trip with the various congregations on the north island. I will be doing some outreach efforts among the Chinese speaking people there as well.

I attended and spoke at the Power Lectures this year. It is an annual lectureship conducted at the Southaven Church of Christ just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. The theme was: “Soldiers of the Cross.” My topic at the lectures was: “Weapons of Mass Destruction – Homosexuality.” It was good to see many brethren at the lectureship there.

I now have about three weeks before I leave for my Taiwan-China trip.

I have picked up a virus in my eye, called eyeritis. I will be taking eye drops for the next four weeks. Hopefully, this will take care of it.

WE NEED OUR YOUNG PEOPLE!
John M. Grubb

“Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them” (Eccl. 12:1).

These words were penned by the wise king Solomon in the latter days of his life. He realized the importance of being obedient to the Lord in two ways: (1) Now, not later, not when you are 35 or 85, but right now, and (2) in the days of thy youth. Solomon was aware of the false notion that it is easier to obey the Lord when you are older than when you are younger. The older we get, the easier it is to say “no” to the will of the Lord (Heb. 3:15).

We need our young people. We older members of the church sometime forget the unused part of the body of Christ. Our young people, if allowed, can play a vital role in the fulfillment of the mission of the church.  It is up the leadership of the church to see that the younger members are included in the work of the church as well as the worship of the church. We need them to supply the enthusiasm and energy needed to keep going until the job is finished.

God loves young people. When the apostle John wrote, “For God so loved the world,” he had in mind the young as well as the old. God loves young people!  Jesus knew what it was like to be a teenager. He can help you through this period of life (Lk. 2:52; Heb. 4:15-16).

What shall we do with our young people? What can our young people do for the church? They can assist and teach classes, teach their friends the gospel, pass out tracts, take religious surveys, help the elderly with work around the house, visit the sick, pray for the elders, and be a shining light for Christ in the world (Matt. 5:16), What can we do for the young people? We can treat them like they are needed and wanted. We can put them to work for Christ. We can extend fellowship to them, and help them to have fellowship with other Christian young people. We can prepare them for the future.

Let’s involve them in the job we all have to do. Let’s close that generation gap that should not exist in the body of Christ. It is up to you and me, will you help?

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou  an example of the believers, in word, in  conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Tm. 4:12).
