Late July Activities

Because my last trip to Asia kind of messed up my report schedule, I did not send out my July report until the middle of the month. So, the August report begins with the second half of the month of July.

On July 17th, I headed to the Palatka, Florida area to visit with Mike and Lydia Tubbs and also the brethren at the College Road Church in Palatka. I had the privilege of giving a report of my recent overseas mission trip on Sunday   evening, July 20th at College Road. They are one of the congregations supporting my work.

When I returned home, I worked on the final drafts of my manuscripts for the Four Seas College Lectures in Singapore and the Southeast Georgia Lectures in Richmond Hill, GA. The Richmond Hill lectures are in late October and the Four Seas College Lectures are in late November.

I am happy to report my fractured right foot is now completely healed. The doctor has released me. For now, I am leaving the screw in my foot. No thanks to more surgery. Thanks for your prayers.

News and Letters from Around the World

SYMPATHY: It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of Don Greene II. Don was the son of Don and Janice Greene, the husband of Kellie Greene, and the father of Mikaela and Matthew Greene. He had been battling cancer for about three years. He was a Registered Nurse and worked for Anthem, but first and foremost, he was a gospel preacher and an elder in the Lord’s church. He was 47 years old. I knew him for most of his life and appreciate the good work he did in the Kingdom. He will be missed. Funeral services and burial took place in mid-July in Terre Haute, Indiana. Please continue to remember his family in prayer.

GOSPEL MEETINGS: I am conducting two gospel meetings during the month of August. I will be at the Northside Church of Christ in Terre Haute, IN – August 10-13. Then I will conduct a weekend meeting at the Coal City, IN Church of Christ – August 15-17. If you are in the area and have an opportunity to attend, we will look forward to seeing you.

REMEMBERING MY DAD’S BIRTHDAY: Had my dad lived, he would have turned 90 years old on July 25th. He has now been gone for over ten years.

MEMORIAL: A contribution was made in memory of Don Powell, who passed away on June 19th. The contribution was made by his mother, Hazel Powell.

WVBS Filming and SWSBS Graduation

Before traveling to Texas on July 7th, I first traveled to Bremen, Georgia to speak on their summer series. My topic was “Moses and Christ – Type and Anti-Type. The following Monday (7th), I went to Maxwell, Texas to film nine more lessons in Chinese to complete a fifty-seven lesson re-taping of “More Basic Facts” of the Faith.

I arrived in Texas on Monday, July 7th. Beginning on Tuesday, I spent the next three days recording the Chinese lessons at World Video Bible School. Someone asked me how many video lessons I have recorded. When I began to think about it, I realized that I have been in front of a camera close to 500 times. This includes both English and Chinese lessons.

On Friday, I moved in to the Austin, Texas area to attend the banquet and graduation for the Southwest School of Bible Studies at the Southwest Church of Christ. This was the first time I had the opportunity to attend this banquet. The food was very good (Dickie’s Barbeque) and the speeches given by the graduates were very encouraging.

On Sunday, Tom Moore (the father of one of the graduates) preached at both the morning and evening services. After the evening services, the Commencement Exercises began. There were a number of speakers including: David Locke, one of the elders at Southwest; John Moore, one of the teachers at the school; and Rick Brumback, the director of the school. John Chen, the son of William and Yolanda Chen, led the singing on Sunday evening and I had the privilege to lead the closing prayer for the program.

We were glad Frank and Betty Parker and Wendell and Doris Fikes were also able to attend the weekend activities. They are also friends and supporters of the Chen family. Thanks to all of our Texas brethren who extended their hospitality and friendship on the recent trip to the Lone Star State.

In August, John Chen will head to Searcy, Arkansas to begin studying at Harding. At the end of August, William and Yolanda will go back to Taiwan, living in the city of Taipei, to begin their efforts there. It will take them a little while to get “squared away” before diving into the work before them. I will look forward to seeing them in September when I am there. Please keep the Chen family in your prayers.

Habersham County Church of Christ VBS

After returning from Texas on Monday, I traveled to Habersham County that evening to hear Barry Hatcher talk about his work in Indonesia and his efforts with Fishers of Men. It was good to see Barry and Melany Hatcher again.

On Tuesday evening, I spoke about our work among the Chinese people and also gave some information concerning the Chinese culture. The teachers in the classes for younger children tailored their lessons to go along with overseas mission work in places like Indonesia and China.
