Upcoming China Trip

On August 8th, I headed back to Indonesia to be reunited with my wife and to try to get her a visa to enable her to travel to the states. For the third time, it was denied. We will be trying other methods of acquiring the visa sometime next year.

The Sunter congregation in Jakarta had a seminar of how to determine what God authorizes in the Bible. Mike Leong and Tammy Swithern, from Malaysia, were the speakers for this program. Even though the entire seminar was conducted in the Indonesian language, I was able to get much out of the lessons.

We then headed back to Lampung where Eta and I spent two weeks helping with the teaching of English at the Southern Sumatra Bible Academy. This class was for the third-year students. Eta is a trained language teacher and can teach Indonesian to foreigners and English to Indonesians. We had a couple of others join the class as well.

While in Lampung, I have had several opportunities to teach Thursday night Bible class and to preach on several Sundays.

I am trying to improve my ability to speak Indonesian. I am learning new words all the time and hope to be able to start putting together sentences in the near future. I do have a goal to preach a sermon in Indonesian before the end of this year.

I am scheduled to arrive in Shanghai on September 5th and will be there until September 23rd. I will make a report of this trip to visit our friends in Shanghai recorded in the October report.

As usual, when I return to the United States, I will give a report of my latest mission to the Chestnut Mountain congregation. It will be at the evening worship service on October 13th.

Financial Support

It is now the time of year when congregations start making their budgets for the next year. Also, as we get near to the end of the year, brethren think about making one-time contributions to a work, or make a decision to become a regular supporter of a work. Our brethren have been generous through the years and we are thankful for the continued generosity which makes this work possible.

For the past thirty-eight years of our work, our contributions and many of our contributors have changed from year to year. We are thankful for the steady support we have received through the decades.

We hope that in the coming year, 2020, we will be able to keep our current contributions, and, if possible, to have some new contributors begin to support our work. It may be possible that some of our contributors will be able to increase their contributions in the new year. If that is possible, it will be greatly appreciated.

If you know of brethren who might be interested in becoming part of our work, please forward this report to them, or put them in touch with me so that I can inform them of the work we are trying to do in evangelism and edification. Except for China and the United States, my wife is traveling with me on all of my mission trips. I am thankful she is able to do this to enhance the work we are doing. Because of our inability to obtain a visa for her, I am spending more time overseas than I have in the past.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for making all of this possible. John and Eta Grubb

July Events

As with most times when I am back in the states, I spend much time in catching up with office work, material preparation for future trips and speaking appointments, and, of course, spending time in communication with my wife. We talk two to three hours each day.

As much as I wanted to do some traveling while I was back in the states, I did as little traveling as possible. I was able to go to the Avondale congregation to hear Don Blackwell speak. Don is scheduled to go back home the first week in August. He still has a long way to go in his rehabilitation, so please pray for Don and Sheri.

July 25th marked the 95th anniversary of my dad’s birthday. He passed away in 2004. My mother will turn 95 years old on August 15th. If you would like to send her a birthday card, you can send it to the following address:

Pray for Eta’s Visa

As I begin my 73rd mission trip, in August, Eta will be applying once again for her tourist visa to the United States. Please remember her in your prayers. If she does not get it this time, we will probably wait until next year to try again.

Because Eta was not able to travel to the United States in July, I am returning earlier than planned to be with her before going on to China during the month of September. While in Sumatra, both she and I will be teaching English classes to the students at the school. This will give them the opportunity to hear English spoken by an American as opposed to one of the local teachers. We are thankful we have local teacher to teach the Bible in the Indonesian language. It is also the purpose of the school to help the students to be able to speak some English as well.

Eta will be teaching English grammar to the students, while I work with them on pronunciation and word usage.

While I am in Lampung, I will also have some opportunities to teach in the Thursday night Bible class and to preach and teach on Sundays as well. Of course, these efforts are only possible because of the local brethren who can provide the necessary translation.

Financial Support

I usually only ask for any financial help as we near the end of the year and look forward to the next year. Brethren have been generous through the years and we are thankful for the continued generosity which makes this work possible.

For the past thirty-eight years of our work, our contributions and contributors have had changes from year to year. We are thankful for the steady support we have received through the years.

We hope that in the coming year, 2020, we will be able to keep our current contributions, and, if possible, to have some new contributors begin to support our work. It may be possible that some of our contributors will be able to increase their contributions in the new year. If that is possible, it will be greatly appreciated. Because Eta is traveling with me on most mission trips, there is the extra cost in airline tickets.

If you know of brethren who might be interested in becoming part of our work, please forward this report to them, or put them in touch with me so that I can inform them of the work we are trying to do in evangelism and edification.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, John and Eta Grubb.
