Mission Trip to New Zealand Report

On January 31st, Eta and I departed Indonesia for New Zealand. It was my 71st mission trip and it was Eta’s 2nd mission trip. We are thankful that Eta’s New Zealand visa was approved.

Before leaving Indonesia, we were finally able to finalize the legal documents for our marriage. We have now taken care of that. We will take the documents to the American embassy in Jakarta in March to register our marriage with the United States government.

We had quite a trip to get from Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia to New Plymouth, New Zealand. We departed (late-fog) out of Lampung to Jakarta, had a short layover there, then departed for Singapore. We had almost a seven-hour layover in Singapore, but we were able to secure a room with a shower in the transit hotel which included a meal, so this made the transit much better. We departed Singapore about midnight on Quantas Airlines, and headed for Melbourne, Australia. We slept almost the entire way to Melbourne. Again, after a short layover, we headed for Auckland. We arrived in Auckland and spent the night there before flying on to New Plymouth, arriving there on Saturday afternoon.

Our first stop on the New Zealand trip was to New Plymouth. This is where Chris and Michelle Herd are working with the church. This was my third visit to this congregation. A gospel meeting had been arranged for Sunday through Wednesday. We met Caitlyn Morrison at the Herd’s house. She is a young lady from the great state of Texas and is in New Zealand to encourage the work here. On the last night of the gospel meeting, Courtney Neil obeyed the gospel. She is a friend of Caleb Herd and has been studying and attending services for quite a while. The lessons were well-received during the gospel meeting. I also had the opportunity to teach the Thursday night class before we departed New Plymouth. We are thankful we had the privilege to have a part in the efforts made during this trip.

On Friday, February 8th, Chris Herd transported us to Porirua for the next week of our efforts in New Zealand. We enjoyed the hospitality of Lance and Kristen Mosher.

On Saturday, we spent our free day to do some sightseeing in Wellington. That evening, we attended the farewell dinner for one of the American families returning to the states.

On Sunday morning, we attended the services of the church in Wellington, but I was not scheduled to speak. I did speak at the afternoon services of the Porirua congregation. I also taught the Bible class.

On Monday, I began a series of lessons for Lance to record and put on his YouTube channel. I recorded lessons and Monday and Tuesday and completed a series, plus I did two short clips on other subjects.

On Wednesday morning, I help to distribute pamphlets in the Porirua area. On Wednesday night, I taught the Bible class in Wellington. Thursday was our last day in the Porirua area before moving on to our next location.

On Friday, Lance Mosher drove Eta and me to Napier to work with the Hawkes Bay congregation. It was good to be with David Vickers as well as Joe and Tuai. I spoke to the congregation there on Sunday.

On Monday, we took at bus from Napier to Hamilton to begin our week with James, Emily, Simon, and Shiloh Cammack. On Tuesday, I had the privilege to speak at a local nursing home. On Wednesday night, I spoke at the local midweek service. On Thursday, while James and I were out inviting people to the meeting, Emily and Eta were at a luncheon for the ladies. The gospel meeting began on Friday night. We had two lessons on both Friday and Saturday night. We had two first time visitors to the gospel meeting on Saturday night and Sunday morning. We finished up with two lessons on Sunday morning. Sunday evening, we enjoyed the birthday party for Simon Cammack. On Monday, we departed for Palmerston North.

We took a seven-hour bus ride to reach Palmerston North. The scenery was beautiful. While we were in Palmerston North, we had the privilege to stay with Rod Kyle. We arrived on the first day of the campaign that was being conducted in the city and we jumped right in the second day. We were thankful to be able to knock on doors for three days while were there. There was almost a total of 1,000 doors knocked in those three days. Good prospects were being found. We hope to hear good things from the results of this campaign. We are thankful for the good work being done in the area by the members of this congregation.

On March 1st, we flew to Auckland for the last weekend we would be in New Zealand. We were able to spend one day doing some sightseeing in downtown Auckland before spending the last full day with the brethren at the South Auckland congregation. On Sunday morning I preached in the worship service then taught the morning adult Bible class. We had lunch with some of the members, then in the evening, there was a monthly joint worship with the other congregations in town. I also had the privilege to speak at this service as well.

On March 4th, we boarded an early morning flight to Jakarta via Sydney and Singapore. We spent the night in Jakarta before heading back to Lampung. We arrived safely on the 5th of March.

We are thankful we had the opportunity to spend time with the brethren in New Zealand. My wife did a wonderful job in supporting the work we are doing among the brethren. Even though this was Eta’s second mission trip, she really enhanced the work we were able to do. We are thankful for the part we played in helping to spread the gospel and edify the saints in New Zealand.

Thank you for your prayers on our behalf during our recent travels. Please continue with those prayers.
